Amen, Andy! Excellent explaination. I can't use my Yaesu VX-5R HT with an Arrow attached in a metropolotin area for the very reasons you describe. It works fine with a long "Rubber Duck" but with all of the aluminum in the Arrow attached it becomes very deaf due to front end overload.
