I got to talk on the AO-51 today was pretty neat! Sorry for my bad performance, I was using the Elk, handheld for the first time and probably should not practice on that bird. I dont know how you guys do it, my arm was all getting tired, gotta be a better way to do that. Camera tripod or something?
Also I was receiving it on the western pass, but there was no one there. Unless I was picking up something else on that frequency...Is it on all the time now? Will it be on this morning? I thought you guys were turning it on and off?
Anyway, thanks to all who do the work, something about talking on the satellite's, I love it every time!

Congrats on your first contacts!
I built a handle for the Elk out of PVC pipe. It's long enough (about 4 feet) so that I can rest one end of it on my hip to carry most of the weight. The passes are only 10 minutes or so, so my arm doesn't get too tired with the rest of the weight. I call it my 3-axis Armstrong rotor :-) AO-51 has been having some issues lately, so you'll want to also try out AO-27 and SO-50. Just remember that if you don't hear other stations then either your receive freq is wrong, volume is turned down, antenna is pointed the wrong way, radio is in the wrong mode, or the satellite isn't operating. In any of those cases, transmitting will either cause QRM or be fruitless :-)

This is exactly what I do! It works well and keeps things reasonable for a pass. The peice I use might be a tad shorter, but same principle...rest it on hip.
