Waterproof mast mounted preamp enclosure?
Looking to move my two mast mounted preamps into an enclosure. Who knows of a good mast mounted waterproof enclosure that will handle 2 Advanced Recv'r 160 Watt Mast Mounted Amateur Preamp's inside? The preamps are 5" wide and 2-1/2 deep. I could stack them on top of each other or side by side. Let me know if the suggested enclosure will have the hardware to mount to the mast. Provide me with links to the items.
Thanks. Steve NS3L
I'm using a 8x8x4 outdoor electrical box with the two preamps stacked on top of each other. Photo on this page: [ http://members.dslextreme.com/users/k6ccc/Photo/Pics/SatAnt2.html ]( http://members.dslextreme.com/users/k6ccc/Photo/Pics/SatAnt2.html )

The cheapest outdoor boxes I find that are quick opening are the ones sold as "60 amp AC Disconnects". These are the boxes that go on the wall out at your AC or heatpump.
Get the one without fuses and you get the box and 60 amp pullout switch for only $7 or so. I use lots of them (on my solar and other high power stuff) where I use them for the required Solar Disconnect, for series parallel switching of the arrays from 500v to 250v so I can use the DC power directly during grid outages, or for A/B switching to my backup generator, etc. They are Dual pole switches and 60 amps! For $7 with box.
For the generator switching I pull the guts out of one and add it inside another one so that it becomes a DPDT transfer switch by moving the pullout from one slot to the other.
Removing one screw and all the disconnect swtich stuff falls out and leaves a clean box. Not bad for outdoor WX enclosure for $7.
But MAYBE NOT FOR A MAST where rain can be blowing up from any direction besides DOWN. Then maybe some rain can blow in the cracks?

Lowes, Home Depot, Menards all carry gray plastic electrical junction boxes with o-ringed covers. Waterproof, indestructible. Put your holes anywhere. Sizes from 2" cube up through at least 12x12x8. I've put remote mounted transverters, relays, amplifiers in them.

If you want the best quality, look for a standard NEMA-4 electrical enclosure. They are metal with a sealed door and screw latches. They also typically have a metal backplane (sometimes as an option) that can be removed for easy mounting of components with no need to drill into the actual enclosure. They are rated to provide protection from ingress of dust, water, and sleet as well as accumulation of ice. Since it's metal you can also ground it.
If you want to get really fancy you can go NEMA-4X which adds additional corrosion protection. They're made of stainless steel and will outlast pretty much anything you put inside it.
A google search will turn up many sources.
