Deeply sorry to hear Ray Soifer is SK. Ray was a truly decent man and good for AMSAT.

I fondly recall getting an email from Ray each year before the AMSAT UK Colloquium. He would attend and usually do a live demo of an FM bird. We would set up a sked on a mutual Trans-Atlantic pass and work with just a few degrees elevation.
He will be missed.

I recall Ray being my point-of-contact in December 2000 as acting AMSAT President while then President Robin Haighton, VE3FRH was on a trans-Atlantic flight. I had arranged for NORAD/Space Command to track the disabled AO-40 spacecraft using its deep space phased-array radar at Eglin AFB. As soon as I received a report that the radar tracked only a single piece, I called Ray with the encouraging news. Ray happily received the report and passed it on to Robin as soon as he was available.
In the meantime, I passed the most current orbital state, derived from the NORAD tracking data, to the AO-40 command team. The rest is history as AO-40 was successfully reset and subsequently recovered on 25 December 2000. But I would again point out Ray's role in those activities.

It is very sad to hear of Ray's passing.
I have earned two of Ray's QSL cards over the years. The first from 01-Jan-1997 during Straight Key Night on OSCAR, which was an annual event that he organized. I worked him via RS-10 Mode A (CW, of course).
His QSL card states that he was first licensed in 1955 at age 12. Ex-K1WXC, K2QBW, WA4IJR, G5DDU, and W2RS since 1976. Active on HF, VHF/UHF and OSCAR. Member of the ARRL, RSGB, AMSAT, AWA, CSVHFS, OOTC, PVRC, and the Radio Club of America.
The second card confirmed an AO-27 contact on 30-September-1998 when he operated a Yaesu FT-50R VHF/UHF dualband FM handheld into an MFJ-1717 whip antenna while attending the XIII IARU Region 2 Conference in Porlamar, Isla de Margarita, Venezuela (FK80, IOTA SA 012).
