While we are on the subject, is there a specific APP for the iPhone for Sat Tracking? What are people using?

This is something I'd love to have, but I've never seen one; I've considered writing one (I'm an iPhone owner and I'm fairly well versed in Objective-C), but the math kind of defeated me. :-( I may try to pick it up again when I'm feeling ambitious.

Robert:
The math got me too with the LVB Tracker 2 code. So I massaged the following (with authors' permission) to squeeze into a PIC:
// PLAN13 algorithm: // Copyright 1983-2005 James R. Miller G3RUH // // PLAN13 C port: // Copyright 1997-2005 Edson Pereira N1VTN // // AOS/LOS algorithms: // Copyright 1992-2002 John Magliacane KD2BD
KD2BD's AOS/LOS code was taken from the Predict source. As the iPhone is a massive device compared to a PIC, you could probably port Predict without resorting to the starved memory scenarios of PLAN13. I still live in the old days when memory was expensive, and the shoe horning of tight code and data was a respected art. Many of us still wish that were the case while we wait several minutes for our PCs to boot despite a thousand fold increase in CPU MIPS.

While we are on the subject, is there a specific APP for the iPhone for Sat Tracking?
I'm building one. I'll be ready for a few alpha testers before much longer, I hope.
So far the only ham radio applications I've seen for the iPhone are a callbook lookup and a grid square converter, plus perhaps a few Morse code programs.

All right Paul! I've been watching the app store for one. Let us know when your ready...

A bit off-topic, but has anyone considered writing an application for the iPhone that spits out position reports to the APRS internet gateways? It would make a phone self-tracking.

Bruce, This is being done by Steve Dimse k4hg. Steve is working on app approval from Apple for the application which ties to Findu and several other servers I believe. More info is in the APRSSIG archives.
Looking forward to the Sat tracking app for iPhone as well!

Yes, and make it part of the new "Universal Amateur Radio Messaging" Initiative. We hope that someone will make applications for all wireless gizmos used by Hams to be able to link into the APRS system. See: www.aprs.org/aprs-messaging.html

Great! And if I could be so bold as to suggest...
Maybe, since your APP will know where it is, and since it will probbly know the callsign of the user, then would you also consider having your APP send out a PACKET to first.aprs.net (or whatever is the best APRS server) so that then anyone in ham radio community can see where he is an can communicate with that person by callsign alone?
This is part of the "Universal Amateur Radio Messaging System" initiative to make it possible for hams to communicate with hams by callsign alone, anywhere, anytime, using any device (ham radio or cellphone, or whatever). For details, see: www.aprs.org/aprs-messaging.html

Yep, and universal connectivity by-callsign has great potential to keep our dwindling numbers in touch.

With all that happening on the iPhone, the actual Amateur Radio part seems a bit redundant.

Like you, I would set as a design requirement that the app be able to be turned off :-)
With all that happening on the iPhone, the actual Amateur Radio part seems a bit redundant.
I would prefer to see it as integrated with other services, and therefore more useful. Besides, the iPhone app would not currently be practical for many common uses of APRS. If you really want vehicle tracking, for instance, you're not going to buy a phone and put it in the car. But for occasional use an iPhone tracker would be excellent, and increase the general utility of APRS, including that which is available through satellites.
Perhaps others had already noted this, but for java-based phones with the 'JSR 179' API for GPS, there is this application: http://www.aprs-is.net/javAPRSME.htm It seems my family might go to a Samsung Instinct; I think this would fit our APRS bill.

Reflecting on my earlier remark, I didn't want to give the impression that I'm against the technology or those industrious individuals that devise it, on the contrary I applaud their ability and dedication. However I sometimes wonder if we neglect to encourage the very basic communication techniques that brought most of us into the hobby.
I entered the hobby aided by the ability to 'listen in' without special equipment or significant technical ability. I think we need to be careful in the future (in all areas of the Hobby) not to impede this ease of access.

I'm not sure I want everybody to know where I am at every given hour of the day....
No, but being able to push a button and inform all of ham radio where you are sometimes as needed is very powerful. Like portable Sat operations for example.
Besides, the iPhone app would not currently be practical for many common uses of APRS. If you really want vehicle tracking, for instance...
Forgive me for stumping like this, but that is a common misconception. See www.aprs.org/APRS-tactical.html
APRS was never designed to be a vehicle tracking system. It is a fundamental digital communications backbone network between all operators in a local or global area. No matter what, where, or how, or on what frequency someone is operating, they always have a digital channel to any/everyone else in ham radio on this single national channel.
It's the signalling and info channel for everything. Oh, by the way, yes, it can be used to place you on the map. But in most cases no one really cares where you are... But the end-to-end connectivity for simple text messaging only by callsign is very powerful. See www.aprs.org/aprs-messaging.html
Its supposed to be a resource for seeing what are all the ham radio assets, systems, and nets, and operations are in your immediate area live, now.
Sorry for the stumping. Bob, WB4APR

Do you anticipate releasing the source code? I know you need Special Stuff From Apple to run it on a real iPhone/iPod Touch (which I have), but I'd still encourage publishing it anyway.
We have too much closed-source semi-secret ham software out there already.
