Hello
A while back I had a Linux computer that would listen for the ISS then start sending beacons
Trying to cut back on wildly transmitting all day and night
Has anyone used the raspberry Pi ?
It lends itself nicely to such a beacon project
Listen then beacon for ten minutes

Andrew,
What is the purpose of automatically beaconing when the ISS is in range?

Fewer unattended beacons would be very welcome by those of us attempting to make QSOs via ISS packet.

Hi Andrew
It's great to see your interest in QSOs via the ISS.
Maybe Just let your analog computer (brain) do the sending only when you're at the keyboard so that the (limited) channel is (more) clear when you're not at the computer.
I have used Dire Wolf as a software TNC, works fine. Test and prep your station when you're at the keyboard then disable transmission until you return. Unattended beacons when the ground stations can't hear each other causes enough uplink contention already, so a minimalist approach makes things go well.
Think you may find Steve and Clayton eager to enjoy a QSO with you.
Then again, you may tell us you are thinking of doing something beyond just getting unattended packets through the ISS ? (As Clayton also inquires). Something else you're thinking?
Most of all, have Fun !!!
Thanks, Mike W4UOO

The point that I think others are trying to make is: Don't use up potential channel time when you're not actively making a QSO with the ISS. Someone else, who may be using far less power than you do, may be trying to make that elusive contact.

Hello Andrew,
Many times no one is transmitting via the ISS except unattended beacons here over in the US.
When attended stations want to make a QSO, they must fight to get through the unattended beacons. I'd say there are 4-5 of these stations on almost every pass over my QTH, some transmitting every minute or so. Very annoying. I send them APRS messages but not surprisingly, they're ignored 100% of the time.
Even unattended I-GATE's don't need to beacon via the ISS. If their purpose is to take the RF traffic and send it to the Internet, there is no need for them to advertise on 145.825 MHz.

"To see if I can make it" is fine. But once you see that you have made it, why not leave some air time for other folks?
Why would a person keep transmitting once the person has accomplished his/her purpose?

The point that I think others are trying to make is: Don't use up potential channel time when you're not actively making a QSO with the ISS. Someone else, who may be using far less power than you do, may be trying to make that elusive contact.

Andrew, What you should be doing is try using the onboard packet BBS. That way people could read and send you messages. As you're in a low use ISS area this would be ideal for you and other ISS users...

I'll generally send a CQ, then wait for three or four packets to be received to see if anyone is answering. If I don't see any answers in three to four received packets, I'll send another CQ. I've never timed it, but I'm guessing that it's more than once a minute.
So, it's fairly frequent, but I'm sitting there paying attention and in control of when my packets go out. If I don't get any replies after four or five CQs during the peak of the pass, I'll quit sending to make room for other folks.
Just my opinion, but I don't feel like the frequency of sending is as important as the concept of being attentive to and in control of your transmissions. Transmit, then listen/watch for a reply. Repeat as appropriate for conditions (amount of traffic) and your station's (and the Space Station's) capabilities.
Personally, I don't see a reason for an unattended beacon transmission to the ISS. Probably some folks have come up with a reason. If so, please share.

I have done a bit of work with APRS on the Raspberry Pi as a battery powered mobile setup with Xaster. It had a 4in touch screen which made it practical only for emergencies. I think a headless SatGate would be a better use for an RPi. On Sep 21, 2016 6:50 AM, "Andrew Rich" vk4tec@tech-software.net wrote:
Hello
A while back I had a Linux computer that would listen for the ISS then start sending beacons
Trying to cut back on wildly transmitting all day and night
Has anyone used the raspberry Pi ?
It lends itself nicely to such a beacon project
Listen then beacon for ten minutes
