I know there are many out there that work the ISS and cube sats . The question is do any of you use Apple Mac's to do so. If you do what are you using ? I have been trying quite unsuccessfully to get a KPC3 that I got back in 97 to talk to the Mac mini using a TRENDnet TU-S9 usb to serial cable. Using MacTNC or Zmodem. They just do not see a serial port to go to. I am thinking of trying an outboard interface like signal link or one of the others with a built in sound card to use digital modes. I am getting very frustrated and not sure which way to go next. So if any of you Mac users could give me a little advice I am open to it. Thanks -73 WB8ZOM Don
It's been a while since I've done any satellite packet work, but I've used various TNCs (PK-96, TAPR TNC-2) and software (ZTerm, MultiMode, maybe MacTNC). If you aren't seeing the serial port, the problem is probably with the TRENDnet adaptor. I'm not familiar with it (never heard of it, actually), so can't help with specifics. Make sure you have up-to-date drivers for it. I've always used Keyspan USB-serial adaptors; they work well for me in both Mac OS and Windows VM modes.

I know that all the Kantronics TNCs I've tried have been flaky as hell on USB-to-serial converters, probably because they don't provide the full voltage swing that the TNC looks for. I did consider building a converter with a proper level shifter, but an easier solution was to give the KAM to someone with a PC with a real serial port and just stick to using a Tiny-2 when mobile ;-)
In summary, Kantronics KPC-3 == works, kind of; Kantronics KAM == no input, output OK (never gets past the autobaud screen); various Tiny-2-alikes == perfectly okay with USB-to-serial or real serial ports.
