I recently acquired a 1.2 GHZ handheld that has a max output of one watt. Any thoughts about how well this would work with AO51 ? Would a hand held antenna be feasible ? Just curious. Thnx

Hi Mark-Maybe with a fairly high gain antenna and a high elevation. That would be fun to play with. Tracking the doppler would be a challange. But then, "if it were easy, everyone would be doing it".

Most people find that 10 watts to a gain antenna is workable, but get much better results with a brick amp to bump that up to ~70 watts. And while doable, working without active Doppler control is equally painful for you and the stations you are TRYING to work.
My recent acquisition, an Alinco DJ-G7, while a pretty nice rig for normal terrestrial operations, has been a disappointment for satellite use. However, it is the only rig I have with which I can monitor my mode-L uplink, so it is useful in that respect. ;)
