Re: Need advice on circular polarized antennas
Hey, Joe,
You are quite right when one has only linearly polarized antennas at hand, switching V <=> H and vice versa, either by twisting the one antenna to different planes or actually switching between two or more linears in different planes, can make all the difference in the world to your reception strength and quality. Keep up the great work and in thinking these fascinating ideas through. It's learning. It's fun!

Thanks, Ed and Pat. I’m inclined to agree. I can’t see how switching RHCP <=> LHCP is going to make any difference if the spacecraft is transmitting a linearly polarized signal. Others I’ve heard from disagree with that, but I’m inclined to opt for simplicity, switching V <=> H polarization with two Yagis, or wiring the two yagis for CP (either sense), seems adequate. Joe

I HAVE FOUND that *RHCP <=> LHCP switching* is not worth the added complexity, RF losses, cost, and lack of reliability for most Amateur Radio applications. Exception: If you are running an official ARISS Telebridge ground station, an AMSAT OSCAR command station or perhaps a Primary SatNOGS ground station. My 2 USD cents. Just sayin'! DE Pat N8PK-FM19

Just make it polarization switchable: vertical / horizontal, simpler and almost same result.

I’m looking for some advice on antennas for 2 m/70 cm satellite operation. Presently, I have home-brew yagis for each band, horizontally polarized. To eliminate fading due to satellite rotation, I want to replace these antennas with circularly polarized ones. But the new antennas need to be relatively lightweight, because I have to lug them up on a ladder to mount them, and, well, I’m not as young as I used to be. I have been considering the WiMo circular polarized antennas (#18010 and 18011), but would first like to hear from people who have experience with them. I like to build things myself, but the WiMo design looks cleverer than anything I’ve been able to come up with so far. Any advice? Thanks!
