Possible "Rover" Operation from DM76 and possibly from DM 86
Dear Folks:
In a couple of weeks, I am leaving for the summer to work as a seasonal ranger for the National Park Service at Capulin Volcano National Monument. The only ham equipment I am taking with me is that which is suitable for portable operation, i.e., an Elecraft K2 with a Buddipole, and I have an Alinco DJ-G5T with an Arrow Antenna. Capulin is located either in DM 76 or DM 86 (more likely the former) as it really is in an isolated spot.
I've made several thousand satellite QSO's over the years but only one using the HT with the Arrow. Most of the time, I've used my FT-736R (recently replaced by an IC 9700 to M2 CP antennas on the roof with preamps). If I get on the birds using this setup, I'll be confined to (considering the current lineup of FM birds) SO-50, AO-27 and maybe AO-91 (if it keeps operating in daylight). I have a few questions that I'm hoping that you can help me with.
1) I am assuming that DM76 and DM 86 are desireable grids? I certainly don't have them.
2) I know a lot of portable operators record their passes for logging purposes later. Is the voice memo recorder on my iPhone sufficiently sensitive, particularly to pick up both ends of the QSO?
3) I have been uploading to LOTW for several years now. How accurate does the time entered into the log have to be to ensure a mutual confirmation on LOTW? In other words, do I have to have it within +/- 5 minutes? I'm just thinking that I won't be able to be very precise with the time of a QSO if I'm relying on a recording.
4) Are there any other suggestions people might have for me given my planned setup? I would try and announce my presence prior to a pass via this board, but my internet access (I'll be living in the park) will be spotty.
Thanks for any help and advice you can give me.

DM86 is indeed a ‘wanted’ grid, DM76, not as much see:https://mobile.twitter.com/GridMasterHeat%C2%A0 Many people use AOS time for LoTW times. As I recall there is a 20 minute tolerance to match QSOs.

FYI from the ARRL LoTW website: Confirmation -- when a QSO's two participants submit matching QSO descriptions, that QSO is considered confirmed for each participant. Two submitted descriptions of a QSO match if: - your QSO description specifies a callsign that matches the Callsign Certificate specified by the Station Location your QSO partner used to digitally sign the QSO- your QSO partner's QSO description specifies a callsign that matches the Callsign Certificate specified by the Station Location you used to digitally sign the QSO- both QSO descriptions specify start times within 30 minutes of each other- both QSO descriptions specify the same band (and if specified, the same rx band)- both QSO descriptions specify the same mode (an exact mode match), or must specify modes belonging to the same mode group- for satellite QSOs, both QSO descriptions must specify the same satellite, and a propagation mode of SAT 73, Bob K8BL

Bernie, I envy you having that assignment! Anyway, I'll address one of your questions. When I rove, I log allthe Q's for LoTW at the same time. It makes it much easier whenmaking an ADIF using TQSL. You only need to be +/- 30 minutesto match what the other station uploads. So, if a pass is at 1739Z, I'll log everything at 1745Z. That makes sure I catch everyone in the +/- 30 minute window. That way theonly thing I need to change is the Call in the upload file. Evidently,LoTW doesn't care if you have 15 Q's all at the same time. HIHI Ithasn't been a problem for my Roves over the past 12 years. GL/73, Bob K8BL

Thanks for all the help, you guys. For what it's worth, I've gone ahead and ordered a boom mike headset for the HT (it's just too hard to work a satellite using the built-in mike and listening to the downlink) so I guess that means I'm all in!
I'll try and use the iPhone to record the passes. I'll make sure and use language for the benefit of the recording to confirm I've worked a particular callsign.
Again, when I get there, and I'm ready to get on the air (I'll have to enter a new location into my Ham Radio Deluxe Software, into TQSL, and I'll have to break out my ancient GPS so I can figure out where the grid square lines are), I'll post something on here and, hopefully, you guys will hear me.
Thanks for the encouragement.

Bernie- You said you have an iPhone. Use this free app to get your grid square and then you won't need your GPS. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/ham-square/id400450610 -David, N9KT

Bernie, Also, you can check out where Grids & Grid Lines are in advance by scoutingthem out on SOTA Maps. It shows you a map or a SAT view so you can actuallysee where you want to go. Then, you can see if it is a clear spot or in the middleof a lake - HIHI. Link below. GL/73, Bob K8BL https://www.sotamaps.org/
