The QO-100 Challenge for North America
It is understandable that amateur radio operators in North America are disappointed that they cannot experience the fun of using QO100. However, although the footprint charts that have been published show that it is not possible, there have been good reports recently about the successful QO-100 expedition in Indonesia. In particular YC1HVZ/P successfully operated through the QO100 narrow band transponder from OI42DE at -1.2 degrees elevation! It's very common to use commercial vsat antennas flat on the horizon at ground level, and even negative inclination to carry comms traffic with GEO birds, if need be. Typically if the main satellite has issues, other satellites can be used in this manner while new contracts are sorted out. Example from my work years ago. Agila-2 146E from India, which was almost horizon skipping.
What's the theory behind microwaves working so look angle.?

Dear All,
I have followed this stream and quite happy that the debate for a Region 2 GEO has again great interest and surely encourage same.
These days playing with GreenCube I just realized that a MEO could be also be a great solution as from my location (LG89ux) theoretically will be able to contact South Americas to eastern Australia, All Europe, Africa and Asia, actually from my QTH a potentially greater coverage than QO-100 but surely with much limited access time. So guess that MEO could be also be look into.
Just my 1 cent input

Here in the United States, the Powerball lottery drawing is now up to $1.2 BILLION USD. I bought a "quick pick" letting the computer decide my numbers earlier today. If I become a billionaire (until the tax man comes at me), the western hemisphere is getting it's own geosynchronous satellite for amateur use only!!

Good luck! You might avoid the taxes by setting up (or donating to) a non-profit to do the job.

Good luck! You'll spend most of the after-tax proceeds on this goal:
Villain said the average capital expenditure for deploying a GEO satellite, including manufacturing, launch, insurance and gateway stations, ranges from $150 million to $500 million.
