After receiving a mailing today from Amsat written by Richard Hambly. I find it imposable to keep quite any longer. Has anyone heard of the saying, putting the cart before the horse. Amsat needs to finish at least one of there present projects before moving on to what in the end may well turn out to be a bunch of pipe dreams. I am speaking of the Mars mission and Geostationary packages. One year ago I was told that Cubesat II would be launched in the fall of 2007. As far as I know very little is done yet. Especially in the electronics end. Don't get me wrong all these ideas are great but lets get back to the basics and finish what we have started befor taking on anything new or nothing will get done. AMEN FRED!!
I was making small regular donations to AMSAT when the thinking was to launch the next HEO, and earmarking and doing it for that purpose....I hope they are still earmarked for that event.
In the interim funds have been spent, I am sure for, dozens of other projects...
AMSATS, other than NA have their agendas, and appear to keep on track with them. ESA has been a big supporter in the past of P3E and Peter and his group are proceeding with those plans.
I know many of our AMSAT-NA's head technicians are also heading in that direction. Most members know who they are, and with my memory I would hesitate to mention a few, and miss the other great folks out there assisting with P3E...
I seems as tho the politicians in AMSAT have a different agenda.
The OSCAR 1 GROUP (Project Oscar) did it with no politics and funding, and thanks to Robert Turlington, G8ATE, we will be celebrating the launch of GB ZERO OSCAR ONE (GB0O1) on 12 to 16 December. I haven't seen much AMSAT-NA of that event either. And it would cost NOTHING!!
Looks as tho the goal is to spend money??? A profit motive lurking somehwere??
Of course money, to do things, is necessary today. but is seems to me:
THE CART BEFORE THE HORSE WILL COST EVEN MORE

Pulling for P3E...
Fred,
I am confused by your comments. Nothing has changed in the past three years except for the introduction of a possible P4 launch opportunity.
The Mars mission has been in the planning stages for years by AMSAT-DL and would be funded by German government sources if it actually happens. It is the main justification for the P3E mission and therefore is quite important if you want to see P3E launched.
The P4A (geostationary) mission is also referred to by some as "Eagle light." That is because it is essentially the same as the Eagle project but without all the hard stuff like rocket motor, fuel, tanks, plumbing, solar panels, battery charge regulator, navigation sensors, etc. Given that it is pretty much the same otherwise I wonder how this is a "pipe dream?"
With all due respect, I suggest that you may not be adequately informed. Did you attend the Annual Symposium to find out what is really going on? Have you visited the AMSAT Lab yet? Have you attended an AMSAT Board meeting or written to the Board members to get more information? Do you read the project reports in the Journal? If you think things are headed down the wrong path then I recommend that you get informed and get personally involved. I think you will find that some of your perceptions are correct (very little is done yet) and some are not (the cart [is] before the horse).

Rick one of the duties of the executive is to keep the membership informed, not everyone can attend the Board Meetings or the Annual meeting and Symposium or visit the Lab, Yes Fred May not be adequately informed but I believe that is a function of the Executive " to ensure that all members have the up-to-date information presented to them on a regular Basis. How else can we expect the membership to contribute towards the AMSAT projects. 73

Yay, Robin!! You kept us all very informed, and that was the case right thru your outstanding performance as president....
I don't know what or why the change either??
I have never seen the development of "attitudes" degrade as much since I became a member in 1980...What "hoppened"???
Leanore and I attended every convention we could, and Leanore assisted in developing and serving at the one in San Diego. Some remember we did the jewelry contests for years, just to maybe interest some of the wives to attend also...It seemed to work...
Now we just quit going....

This is a good idea...
Hopefully such a new organization would be a magnet to attract all the dreamers and complainers and arm chair designers. Maybe the New leadership could promise the sky and at least keep them busy enough with pipe-dreams and visions and circular complaining to satisfy all their needs.
Mean time, then the few dedicated volunteers of the old AMSAT that are doing the best they can to find a launch, and effective hardware, can stay focused on the light at the end of this long tunnel.
Ham radio never-ever acomplishes anything by complaints and telling others what they "should be doing". Ham radio only makes progress when those with the initiative and the knowledge, and the interst just go forward. It is really best to just stay out of the way and support them in the charge.
If one doesn't have the access, tools, knowledge or time, to push the momentum forward, then the best one can do is contribute to support the efforts of those that do. But complaining and trying to re-direct the energies of the "movers" accompishes -nothing- in the positive direction towards success. It only hinders it.
Getting to space is extremely complex. There are very precious few in AMSAT who actually can pull it off. We need to stand behind them with support and not at all sides shooting at them.
