Satpc32 and ICOM 9700
I'm confused, the address for my radio is A2h but the choices inside Satpc32are nothing like that. What am I missing? Also, how can you confirm the program and radio are communicating? How can I force the program to do something to the radio and thus show me that they arein contact with one another? I've turned on CAT and it goes plus without anerror but that's not enough THanksPeterW2PP
Peter,
I had the same problem until I looked back through the general documentation. Was not clear in the 9700 setup instructions.
When you bring up the radio setup it comes up showing "Model" in the top pull down field next to "Radio 1". Select Icom radio button, then you need to click on that pull down field and select the third choice which is "Addresses" it should show "$A2 $A2" in the pull down field just below. If not, you can activate the pulldown and select the correct one or adjust each field using the "up/down" arrows beneath each address that is shown.
Hope that makes sense.

Peter,
I forgot two important adds about selecting the 9700 and the correct Baudrate which ARE described well: http://www.dk1tb.de/IC9700_settings.htm
I use the USB settings and they work as advertised. Some folks say the C-IV setup works more reliably, but I have not seen a difference except that the USB speed is more lively.

Would be nice if the USB settings "worked as advertised".
If the VFO know is not moved, then yes, all is ok. However, once you start to tune around the bandpass, SatPC32 eventually 'loses' comms with the 9700 and will not doppler tune. However, not all comms are lost. If you select another line in CAT Tuning, the radio now changes to that frequency. You can even select another satellite and frequency/mode changes. BUT, radio no longer follows doppler tuning and tuning the VFO does not update on SatPC32. Go figure.
Have tried both http://www.dk1tb.de/IC9700_settings.htm and https://www.amsat.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/SatPC32-IC9700-Se..., makes no difference. Same under Win7 & Win10.

Hi Rick
I would have to say, my experience is not the same. I use the VFO knob all the time, just like I was on 20M and I have never had an issue. I actually does work as it should and it continues to doppler tune just fine.
Mine is on the USB port. Maybe we should compare settings. If I had the problem you are seeing, I would try reducing the baud radio (or even try increasing it). I am at 19200, but I bet you could safely run at 9600 as the amount of data being moved is pretty trivial. I am away from my computer, but I think my interval speed is set to 30.
The issue I have is that about once a week, the SATpc32 and the radio fail to communicate. Then, I turn off the radio and shutdown SATpc32. I restart both and it is fine for another week or so.

That has nothing to do with SatPC32 but is a problem of the USB port, I think. I noticed the same sometimes. Here it helps to unplug the USB cable from the PC and to plug it in again. With CAT control via the CI-V connector of the IC-9700 you would not have the problem.

Hi Erich,
But on 2 different computers running Win7 or Win10? Same problem on both? The whole point of using USB, is it handles both comms and audio. CI-V is a step in the wrong direction and more cables to worry about.

Rick,
In your power options do you have the USB port set to never go to sleep? Things with USB in general have worked much better for me once I have set the system (Win 7 and now Win 10) to leave the port powered at all times.

John brings up a very good point about not allowing the USB ports to sleep. Another consideration---with all the various dongles, SDR, and such I have gone to using external powered USB ports whenever possible. Much less problems with those (as compared to internal ports).

Yes, all USB ports are set never to go to sleep. I've even tried with external powered hub and issue still remains. Gone through all the settings with a fine tooth comb too. Unplugging/replugging the USB cable as Erich suggested also doesn't work and he also says there is a problem.
There's currently a thread "IC-9700 with SatPC32 not updating" at ic-9700@groups.io where users are having the same issue.
Been using SatPC32 for many years with FT-847 and IC-9100 and it's been great. Only now with the IC-9700, there is this problem. The satellite scene in VK is quiet so never really had to use the VFO much to scan the bandpass on linear birds. RS-44 changed this and it is busy. Many users now can be heard from SE Asia.
So, I've currently downgraded my setup to use CI-V, as it's proving a hassle with RS-44.
Will give PSTrotator a go and see if the issue remains.

Thanks Erich
I know there are 3 players involved. The software, the computer+drivers and the radio. It only takes one of them to fail for it not to work. I am not a big fan of USB connections for 100% reliability and I should move over to using the CI-V Level port to a proper RS232 port on the computer. Too bad the Icom doesn't do a true TCP/IP connection on a port the way the Flex radios do it and we got away from RS232 1/2 century old technology. :)
Thanks for taking the time to reply. Thanks for all your hard work.

Go figure.
Have tried both http://www.dk1tb.de/IC9700_settings.htm and https://www.amsat.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/SatPC32-IC9700-Se...,
makes no difference. Same under Win7 & Win10.
Only cure is to restart Windows.
