The Russian Woodpecker
Those who remember the Russian Woodpecker that could decimate the Amateur Radio Bands back in the 1980’s might be interested to know there is a new Film on NETFIX called “The Russian Woodpecker”!
I thought it was some kind of spy thriller, but I got it on DVD and it turned out to be a documentary with English subtitiles. Wife got bored, but I wateched every word. I had never seen the pictures of it, but here is a guy climbing all over the abandoned antenna and making a documentary. I never knew that the Woodpecker HUGE HF beam array was right on the same property as the Chernobly Nuke plant!
I didn’t see this coming. But the theory of the documentary is that the Chernoybl nuke plant disaster was traceable to “the failure” of the Woodpecker system to work as promised and so the nuke disaster was an attempt by a Moscow Bureaucrat to cause a “situation” at the nuke plant on that fateful day to cause enough of a problem to cause the big INSPECTION of the Woodpecker next door secheduled that same week, to be canceled… to hide their bureaucratic failure to work as promised.
It was made by a Ukranian in brash defiance of the Russians, so there is an agenda here…
Very interesting…. As conspiracy theories go… but also scary when you see the same kind of lies and deception in politicians today that was going on then too.

Here's an interesting tour of the Duga radar from the lens of a few drones.

Ah, the good old Woodpecker..... I was just an SWL when it was in its prime during the 1980s. Many a time I cursed it because it interfered with reception of a certain program or denied me a possible DX catch.
It became as much a legend on the bands as those infamous numbers stations.

Sadly, when you tune across the SW Bands these daysyou don't hear very much. It seems that the Internet hasreplaced many of those wonderful high-power stationsthat used to fill those airwaves.. -BL

Indeed that's the case. Many of those stations went off the air over the years. Many of their transmitters were old and spare parts were hard to come by. As well, they were often expensive to run. Streaming over the Internet cost considerably less.
I used to be a monitor for the BBC World Service. In 1999, it ended its broadcasts to North America and I was told that I could only hear it via the Internet after that.
Slowly, nearly all the familiar stations have gone silent. There are still some on the air, but many are usually heard in North America over existing relays that were used by other broadcasters in the old days. Aside from them, there are a few religious stations and that's about it.
Oh, well, it was fun while it lasted.

I would rather listen to the Woodpecker like I did when I got My lic over 35 Yrs ago than some of the Wood heads I now hear on HF Lol

I remember reading reviews of SW receivers in the WRTH that had filters that could eliminate the Woodpecker. No word on whether there are any radios that can filter out traffic from rogue hams, hi.

Just search for "Duga 3" on Youtube, and you'll get several interesting videos about our favorite Woodpecker :o)
