Hello fellow AMSAT-BBers-
I am a firm believer in Human rights and free speech, but I also do not appreciate the politically oriented, off-topic posts that occur frequently on this list. I get enough junk email!
As an attempt to keep down the noise, I propose a moderated list. This list will contain FACTUAL information and discussions related to Amateur radio satellites. Posts based on personal political and religious opinions will not be permitted. ALL are welcome to join the list with the agreement that their posts will be subject to moderation. It is even possible that the moderated list can subscribe to the AMSAT-BB list (with the caveat that the AMSAT-BB messages will be moderated before showing up on the new list).
If there is enough interest, we can organize this option, and select a GROUP of moderators. Please drop me a note on your opinion of this list.

Why can't the administrator of this list just BLOCK/BAN the one individual who is the cause of the problem? I do that all (not all) the time on a list that i administer. Follow my rules or be gone. To me that would be the easiest way to handle this problem.

YES SIR but you are not managing your trash bin here, I vote to ban you from here as you have your own trash bin to rule out. It is a membership list too open at my taste.
Not nice hey to hear the truth you prefer to hear lies and stay in you ignorance probably.
Make us a favour ask for a moderated BB and name me as moderator!

But whose membership?
Just AMSAT-NA or all AMSAT-??
If someone wants to restrict to all AMSAT members then it would be a mammoth job to coordinate the membership listings of all the individual AMSAT organisations together and keep them uptodate, let alone the fact that the transfer of personal details in bulk may contravene privacy or other regulations from one country to another.
I would rather the list stay as it is and leave the junk mail upto the individual recipient.
If you don't want to read messages by / to / from or about xxxxxxx, then learn how to filter them out yourself or put up with them.

One factor with a moderated list is the additional time delay when you post a message. This may or may not be a problem at any one time. For example, sending a quick note to say some rare station is on the air or that AO-1 just came back on the air or whatever. LEO stuff is time sensitive. Of course, this is a very rare thing and likely not a big problem.
Moderation is always subjective. What if I post a note about NASA or about NARO, but it is in some distant far away theory that it is somewhat, somehow, sorta related to Ham Radio or even perhaps satellites? Does that get tossed too? Where is the line? And with this moderator today is this or that topic okay when tomorrow another moderator says NO WAY? What if I send a message that is highly inflammatory but has everything in the World to do with amateur satellites?
Alas, with all the putrid junk on this list from time to time...a moderated list doesn't sound like a bad idea. I'm torn.

I suggest this numerous time but all my request has been turn down and i even suggested the posting should be restricted to AMSAT members only and again my request has been turn down.
I agree with the rules when you wrote on a public forum there is restrictions and your text should be in their guide-lines here is some of them
No politics No military related text No patriotic related text No business related text No sexual or pornographic text No religious related text No direct attack or insulting text
Now who will be the judge!
I vote for Joe Brown or Judge Judy.
P.S. if North Korea or China was named instead of the USA could be this sudden desire to have the BB moderated will never come out!
I suggest to name me as moderator :)

David,
It should not be hard to set up yet another moderated AMSAT group on Yahoo, though I doubt the movers and shakers will be there. My suggestion is just set up some filtering on messages, since posters normally include their call and/or name, and responders usually include the original posting. As to how effective this is, I had to look in my TWIT folder to see what all the fuss was about. In my case, it only takes two filtered calls to "moderate" AMSAT-BB to my satisfaction.
"Don't read, don't reply" is an effective motto. Having accidentally tripped over some topic filters in the past, I don't think we need to add more restrictions here. My 2¢ worth.

Here Here! As it is now, I read maybe 50 percent of what crosses the Amsat-BB inbox. I know I've missed a few good tidbits here and there, but two factors play in what I do read. The time I have available to read it and second, names that over time I've noted they usually don't add much to the technical side of this hobby (heck...I am on that same lacking list). No matter how you slice it, moderation is equal to at least some sort of censorship. For good or for bad. A well ran, moderated list is a private thing and it could be a very good thing indeed. Unfortunately, I see this particular list remaining as it is, junke or not.

Not interested in a full time moderated list. The reason is that moderation kills the interactivity of discussions. The best solution is to have a list where "trusted" users are unmoderated and others are on moderation. As users become "trusted", by virtue of posting on topic posts, then they can have moderation removed. Conversely, users can be put on moderation if they go off the rails.
Sometimes (like the present), temporary moderation for everyone can be helpful to quell a flame fest, as well. :)
