JAMES: Wondering if you have instructions to make ft817 and ft857 connect to sat32pc and how that works. I have the 857 working as primary. Thanks, Jim KI6WJ
Many thanks - I just am not that familiar with SatPC32 ...

Hi Clint and James,
I've got a full write-up on my 2 x FT-817ND system with SatPC32 on my page at:
http://kb5wia.blogspot.com/2010/10/satellite-portable-station.html
It includes details configuation, screenshot, cables, setup, etc. Same config will apply to an 817+857 install.

Nice article. A couple questions: 1- Can one run both tracking (B5400) and tuning with SATPC32? 2- I didn't know that Yaesu needed a CAT converter to RS232. The K3 has a RS232 port so easy to connect. But I will have to get into SATPC32 to see if it will support control of the K3. 3. Does SATPC32 interface with the Unitrac2000.
I am running winXP with a computer that has a com port and USB.

Hi Ed,
Sure -- SatPC32 runs both tracking and tuning just fine. I don't list it in my article (referenced earlier) but other sections of my blog show how I've connected up a G5500 rotator. Having SatPC32 controll both the dopper tuning and the tracking is awesome -- it's a great program, well worth it.
Some Yaesu's need the CAT convertor -- specifically the FT817, FT857, and FT897. You can either do a USB --> Serial convertor, then a Serial --> CAT convertor, or you can use one of the all-in-one cables that go right from USB to CAT. I've used both (one of each for portable) and they work fine.
SatPC32 and Unitrac? Not sure, maybe someone else knows...

Question I have is, is it possible to use SatPC32 to control 1 FT-817 either in split frequency or in each VFO (ie switching between VFO A & B) with the Doppler shift corrections? At this time my FT-817 is my only 2m/70cm rig that supports SSB and I would like to be able to operate on the linear birds especial ARISSat-1 when its launched. I'm fully aware I would not be able to hear myself in the preferred full duplex operation, but something is better then nothing until I can acquire another SSB rig either in 2m or 70cm.

Sure can, I've done it before switching to the twin radios. If you only configure one radio with SatPC32, it uses the "SPLIT" fuction of the FT8x7 to automatically set both the RX and TX frequencies for doppler on VFOs A & B.
Remember that a critical factor for operating on the linear birds is calibrating your particular radio for the uplink / downlink offset. This is really easy with two radios (since you can hear your own downlink) but with a single radio it's much more difficult. Out of the box, my twin FT-817's were about 2 kHz off with the default frequency offsets in SatPC32. Before ARISSat, try practicing on VO-52 or AO-7 with their 70cm uplinks and 2m downlinks -- they're often not crowded at all, and it will be good to get your rig close in calibration with the help of some others on the air there.

Ron,
Yes you can. Look in the ? > Hints[Radio] > Yaesu Users menu in SatPC. There is a whole writeup on how to do this with one radio.
The stock Doppler.sqf file needs to be updated for the newer satellites. FO-29 setting is off by -2000hz for example, other satellites are pretty close. Ideally you should work with someone who has a good station to help you adjust the settings and then store them and be spot on in the future.
It is best to test on low passes as the Doppler will shift slower compared to a high elevation pass, where the VFO toggling is very pronounced. Make sure you release the PTT often and keep transmissions short so the PC can update the VFO frequencies.
Good luck!
