A local friend here has an Icom 451A 70cm all mode which he might sell me. What is the typical selling price for these rigs? It is in good physical condition with the mic and power cord. Are there any typical problems that show up with these rigs as they age, that I should be looking out for?

During my quest for x75 Icom rigs, I was told a few times that the 471 did not have a service manual, and you had to use a 271 manual for it. Since I have not ever seen one, I tend to think that is true.
I've only used a 471 once, but I have respect for it. The larger problem with it may be its age, and getting some of the specialty ICs could be hard. I seem to remember a few of them selling on ebay in the $200 area?

I have one of these radios. Had many good years of use. A problem came up as follows: the frequency of the radio would not change properly when rotating the tuning knob. I sent the radio in for repair and ICOM sent it back saying that the decoder chip had failed and they did not have any repair parts any more. Good luck, Bob W2CNS

Bob, get in touch with Scott Malcom, MTS, in Washington State. Google it up. Scott is a former Icom tech. He specializes in older Icoms. He has repaired several of my X75 series radios. That being said, I had a decoder chip fail in a not-so-old Kenwood and I had to find another radio for parts. It might be time to think about upgrading to a newer radio. You might find after all is said and done that you have more money in the radio than it is worth. In fact, that might be the case right now after the very expensive trip to Icom. Just a guess. I have and use all of the X75 radios here and it is kind of like keeping a vintage car running. They have better selectivity than anything else out there except possibly a transverter. Good luck.

No more than $100. I actually think they are about worthless based on the current radios available and the age unless you are just into vintage radios. What are you going to use it for? I had a 251A as my first two-meter rig for weak-signal work. It was deaf. It HAD to have an outboard preamp. None of this generation of radios were very sensitive based on the technology used at the time.
I would say it might be a great radio for your repeater work.

I would tend to be slightly more positive. The decoders, while known to fail after a static shock, are old line 4k CMOS. These are still around at fleas and so forth. The X51 series is a solid workhorse IF the switching supply (internal) is OK. Some were good, some were bad and stayed that way. The flourescent display supply is probably subject to electrolytics drying out over time given the age of the radio. I still have mine as a back-up and because it was part of a terrestrial record. It definitely can use a preamp as can almost every all-mode ever created. But it isn't a bad radio at the right price. Here in NE, they are still hovering around $200 or more depending on condition.
