After much checking, I believe what was actually seen was an upper stage of Soyuz booster that launched COSMOS 1184 on June 4, 1980.
Geeze...you engineering/techie guys sure know how to take romanticism out of amateur radio...

I'll plug both sets of keps in and see how they look.
Of course, the original claim is still "out there," pardon the pun: Astronomers and NASA says that we CAN see - under ideal conditions - some sats as they pass overhead. I just need those beautiful weather conditions and sunset and pass data to all align themselves to try again.
