I couldn't hear SO-50 this morning. It should have passed right over head here at EM79. Did other folks have problems or was it just me? About 1224 UTC pass here in southeastern IN. Steve AI9IN
It was heard at 1047 UTC according to https://www.amsat.org/status/ Of course that was 4 hours ago

I have always had a miserable time working this bird. For weeks I’ve been hearing others but no one hears me. The pass just completed took it overhead at more than 50 deg at my QTH. I heard absolutely nothing until the bird was well past TCA and south of me. Suddenly there was KB3IAI and KN4ZAA. Worked both but no one else. Reception was much better on vertical than horizontal. Lots of QRN, however. RayKN2KFM18

SO-50 has a very, very sensitive uplink. I've gotten into it with 50 mW to a whip antenna. Be sure to always use a 67.0 Hz tone.
The 250 mW downlink can be weak and you need high quality coax. For a home station, you almost certainly need a preamp unless you have a very short run of very good coax.

I work SO50 with LMR240UF and D72A. It isn’t as “loud” as AO-91/92 however it does work. Keep in mind that downlink is UHF so it’s trickier though not entirely impossible. For portable operation I am not sure how you would add a pre amp or if it’s worthwhile given that improved local conditions can be had at zero cost. So trying a different location can help. There is a park in EL97 where I can hear SO50 a lot better than at my QTH

I work SO-50 as a Rover (portable) using a regular Arrow and about 10 feetof RG-8X. No duplexer. I use a different coax for each Band since myXCVR is full-duplex with 2 ANT connectors. If you are having trouble getting in/hearing yourself, consider turning down your power in case you are having desense issues. You might be getting in but not know because of desense.
FYI the SO-50 ten minute timer turns off the repeater/transponder after ten minutes *regardless* of whether it is being used or not. So be ready to send a 74.4 hz tone even in the middle of a busy pass :-)

No. I forgot about that option. It's not usually needed by the time it gets to my part of the country. I'll keep that in mind for next time, though.

Did you hit it with the "arm the timer" tone?

SO-50 has a very, very sensitive uplink. I've gotten into it with 50 mW to a whip antenna. Be sure to always use a 67.0 Hz tone.
The 250 mW downlink can be weak and you need high quality coax. For a home station, you almost certainly need a preamp unless you have a very short run of very good coax.

I have always had a miserable time working this bird. For weeks I've been hearing others but no one hears me.

KB3IAI commented on our brief SO-50 QSO that heavy ducting was in progress. After the pass, I went to FT8, and there certainly was all up and down the East Coast. I suspect that was a factor.de KN2K
