Is TH-D7AG the only widely available full-duplex HT??
I was trying to help out another ham get started with satellites, and just checked the on-line HRO catalog. They no longer list the Icom W32A, only its accessories.
Does that mean that the TH-D7A[G] is the only HT being made today which works well on FM satellites??? Are there other vendors besides HRO to check?

I never send unsolicited binary attachments, and so if you receive anything purportedly from kd6pag@qsl.net that isn't signed with my callsign, then it probably isn't from me. There's a new worm/virus out there that appears to be sending infected messages with addresses it finds in their hosts' address books. If you getting strange 'failed mail' messages, that's what going on.]

The back cover of QST has an ad with a "replacement" for the W32A shown on it, but I didn't pay that much attention to it. It looked like it was a new full-duplex HT.

AES still has them listed on their website. I just bought one a month or two ago because I wanted to see how it compared to my TH-D7. You might try some of the smaller dealers, like Burghardt, which apparently still has some. 73, Jim KQ6EA

I was just speaking to a Icom rep last weekend. He confirmed the W32A was no more.
As far as I know, that leaves the D7 as the only new full duplex HT. Sadly, some of the Kenwood reps I've talked to don't even realize it is full duplex!

Hi John:
I just got my TH-D7AG not so long ago and am VERY happy with it. Definitely full duplex on satellite (you'll need either headphones, I use an old personal CD player set with a small Radio Shack converter plug) or external speakers to avoid feedback. In addition you get a built-in TNC and I started dabbing around with APRS, including using the PCSAT-1 on NO-44, so that allowed me to do even satellite APRS. More fun for the money! PCSAT-1 is now in eclipse though :(
I got mine from HRO. Reliable retailer, prices as good or bad as anywhere else I believe.
Now the TH-D7AG is not built as solidly as let's say my Yaesu VX-7, which I like too. I used the latter when I started satellites because that's what I had. In simplex. I never realized how much duplex is better till I got the Kenwood. But I've made many contacts with the Yaesu. If funds were not a problem, then I'd recommend the Kenwood, but just as starter, if another dual band radio is already available, start with that one.

Hi John! 1

You're correct. The IC-W32A might be available from other vendors, and if HRO's web site no longer has the W32A listed then their stores have probably sold their remaining stock of those radios.
As for the IC-91A/AD that Icom is advertising as the replacement for the W32A, it is not a full-duplex radio. In fact, it will take some manual effort to use the new HT with satellites, since its memories won't accept frequencies in different bands like many Kenwood and Yaesu dual-band HTs. I played with the IC-91A at Dayton, and asked specifically about the radio's capabilities related to FM satellite work. It sounded like it would be as useful as my IC-T7H - it can work, but with swapping the TX and RX frequencies manually to work the passes, and not full-duplex. :-( Seems like Icom replaced the cross-band full-duplex capability of the W32A with D-Star.

Ugg, yet another reason to keep babying my Icom Z1A. I've always thought that radio had a very intelligent design and I can't quite figure out why it didn't catch on. Mine's seen a lot of use and I've been fearing that it is going to "go" soon. It occasionally will switch bands, toggle the PL tone, or something else unpleasant by itself. I thought that the W32A would be the logical replacement because they are so similar (no faceplate though..). I don't really look forward to switching manufacturers since I'm so used to Icom's menus. I wonder how they let this market segment slip by?
