Some Web sites state that OSCAR is an acronym for "Orbital Satellite Carrying Amateur Radio."
Or is it "Orbiting Satellite Carrying Amateur Radio?"
This is actually more important than it sounds...(grin)

Fred Hicks, W6EJU, didn’t have a rocket, but he did have the requisite enthusiasm and, having worked for a missile contractor and witnessing six satellite launches, some background in the field. He contacted Stoner and the dream began to be take shape. Hicks eventually became chairman of the Project OSCAR—Orbital Satellite Carrying Amateur Radio—Association located in California, and Stoner wrote the first major article about amateur satellites, published in the February 1961 issue of QST. “Be assured,” he wrote, “that this is not an April Fool joke.”

Why do we call our satellites OSCAR? Because the first four Amateur Radio satellite projects that flew in 1961-1965 were managed by pioneering hams in a US West Coast group known as Project OSCAR--an acronym that stands for Orbital Satellite Carrying Amateur Radio. AMSAT, the Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation, was formed in 1969, by an East Coast group wanting to build and fly hamsats.

And for some obscure reason, the US Navy had a constellation of OSCAR satellites. These made up the Transit navigation program. The Transit system used Doppler shift on frequencies of about 150 MHz and 400 MHz for ships to determine their position.
Just a bit of trivia.

The Navy, actually the Johns Hopkins APL, designation was for the fifteenth letter of the alphabet and because it was not an acronym, only the first letter was capitalized, Oscar versus OSCAR.
More trivia,

The AMSAT glossary lists it as "Orbiting". The "Space Today" history of Amateur satellites lists it as "Orbital". http://www.spacetoday.org/Satellites/Hamsats/HamsatsBasics.html Guess I didn't help you much! Maybe one of the real Old Timers can chime in here! 73, Jim

The January 1962 issue of CQ announced the launch of OSCAR (later called OSCAR 1) and says Orbiting Satellite Carrying Amateur Radio. However, page 32 of the February 1962 issue shows a image of a "Father's List," with OSCAR Logo saying Orbital Satellite Carrying Amateur Radio. The list was flown onboard the satellite. So, with the letterhead on the satellite, I tend to accept Orbital Satellite Carrying Amateur Radio.

...I tend to accept Orbital Satellite Carrying Amateur Radio...
Wow...this gets weirder and weirder...
I can "sense" how a writer or an editor used "Orbiting" to replace "Orbital"without blinking an eye back in the '80s or '90s...or a proofreader changing "Orbital" to "Orbiting" back then and thus changing the acronym in all future literature...
I started this all because I use it as a "trivia question" during my satellite presentations: "What does the acronym, OSCAR, stand for?"
I do not mean to irritate anyone nor instigate trouble (honest, Rosalie!).
Thanks for the feedback!
Clint, K6LCS 909-241-7666
I have only ever heard the acronym explained as Orbiting Satellite Carrying Amateur Radio.
I didn't think satellites actually earned "OSCAR" status until they officially reached orbit and, thus WERE orbiting.
Please correct me if that's not accurate.

Clint,
As the current President of Project OSCAR Inc., I felt some responsibility to answer your question. I went through our current Constitution and bylaws and find no reference to the original definition of OSCAR. I am inclined toward "Orbiting Satellite Carrying Amateur Radio" but that is just my opinion.
I have 26 boxes of company original documents all the way back to OSCAR I but I don't plan to go through them for this definition.
I am still looking for your reason on why you state "This is actually more important than it sounds...(grin)"
As someone else said, maybe some of the original members of Project OSCAR will recall the definition.

Well, we all strive to be correct in our research and writings. And I am finding it very interesting that the older the articles I find, the greater percentage cite "Orbital."
And as an editor and student of the use of the English language, I can envision an uninformed editor or proofreader "mis-editing" a submission of "Orbital" to "Orbiting..."
I use this in my presentations as a "trivia" question: "OSCAR is an acronym - what does it stand for?"
I think the maintainance of the true, historical record is important. And would respect those SKs who have passed on since their OSCAR ventures...May I browse through those 26 boxes next time I'm in the San Jose area???
Thank you...

Clint,
Cliff Buttschardt, (Morro Bay) and Harley Gabrielson (San Diego) were personal friends of mine. I contributed nothing to its construction (active duty as a Naval Aviator at the time), but I was a "beta tester" a long before that name was ever invented.
I was a Pacific Region Coordinator...
Their printed terminology is Orbiting Satellite Carrying Amateur Radio!!
My wife edited THE OSCAR LETTER for a long time when both Nick Marshall and Ross Forbes were president...
She has all the copies. You are welcome to stop by and view them at any time...

Is it really that important?
