Three CubeSats from Santa Clara University
Three CubeSats from Santa Clara University plan to launch this year on three different launch vehicles.
One of them Lambdasat is apparently planning to use the Iridium sat phone system which struck me as odd given that TechEdSat had to have it's Satphone facility disabled due to regulatory issues. Anyone know how they got around these issues ?
Details of the three CubeSats are on the IARU pages
Select Sats which have formally requested Frequency Coordination then scroll to the bottom of the page.

I really wish there was a mechanism that allowed the application of BS repellant without smashing the ingenuity and inquisitiveness of these groups. I'm finding the adult leadership of almost 100% of these groups do not know enough to come in out of the rain. I hate whatever damage is done to the groups, their sponsors, etc by the lack of mentoring. As steely eyed rocket folks know, regulations, policy and understanding the impact are crucial components....

I heard a story about a similar situation here in Canada.
A certain prof taught a course on something like circuit design and he had the students build a small transmitter as a project. I'm not sure about the details but, from what I understand, he had them write the appropriate amateur radio certification exam in order to comply with federal regulations, finding out about it after the fact.
Someone clearly didn't do his homework before starting the course.

Robert, These are supposedly our best and brightest.. Imagine having to attempt to learn from them? Pay real money to attend?? I am a firm believer in www.ratemyprofessor.com . Rock on! n3ykf
Do we know for a fact that they ahve not gotten regulatory approval? I was talking with an Iridium representative who is also a ham about an airplane issue (that is likely to delay our ferry) and this person "seemed" to thing that 1) they had gotten the issues worked out and 2) as long as they did not activate the phone, if they had not, no one cared... I picked this up a while back and it came with all the docs, jumper info..ect. Can these be used for 9.6k baud regular packet? I hooked up the tnc and it comes on with WA8DED Tnc Firmware V 2.6 . If it can be used for regular packet can that firmware be replaced? Thanks 73 Mike kb5wbh
It isn't regulatory approval. The ship has sailed by then. I'd love to see a trusted friendly PSR (prior starting review) to help them select reasonable achievable goals. The projects sound awesome, seem ambitious, and get launched (if the get that far) and fail to achieve much on orbit. The single independent study course or senior design project is not enough continuity and memory to work well...
Food for thought.
