As I recall, the last time I had to attach N connectors to LMR-400 Ultraflex coax, I had to cut off at least 2 strands of the cable's center conductor in order to make it fit into the N connector I was given. Can anyone recommend a preferred N connector plug that is designed to fit LMR-400 Ultraflex without having this problem?

Hi Dave,
Yes, there is one, but when I priced it, maybe 15 years ago, it cost about 10 times as much as the ordiinary "n" connector so I've been "snipping" ever since...Some one is sure to tell us, how much tiny loss that will involve!! Perhaps they are cheaper today!!

Either the correct connectors from Times Microwave, or the RF Industries connectors for "9913" will work. Sounds like whoever you got the connectors from gave you the wrong ones, as I've installed hundreds of N connectors on this type of coax without ever having to trim some strands from the center conductor.
Times connectors: TC-400-NM crimp TC-400-NMC clamp type
RF Industries: RFN-1002-1SI clamp type RFN-1006-3I crimp type

Dave,
I use the RFN-1002-1SI male-N connector with both LMR-400 and LMR-400UF. I have over 20 of them in use in my 2m-eme antenna array. They also fit Belden-9913 cable (but I do not recommend using 9913). No need for any center conductor trimming.
Ordinary N-Male connectors are sized for RG-8/RG-213 coax which has a smaller diameter center conductor. Using them will introduce a small impedance "bump" since one must trim LMR cables to fit them.
In 10+ quantities the RFParts connector costs $5.50/ea. Not that bad an increase over the standard N-Male (In fact about the same cost as Amphenol N-Male's).

David, Several companies stock connectors for LMR 400 and Belden 9913. You never cut strands from LMR 400 It is a solid center conductor copper clad aluminum. LMR 400 Ultra Flex maybe.RF Industries makes connectors for speciality cables Stocked by RF PARTS.

You are absolutely right, Art, but when he said he "cut strands" he certainly had the ultraflex.....BUT, the correct connectors were extremely expensive years ago, and even with the LMR solid center conductor, I used to grind it to fit, and I rather doubt that kept me from even the most marginal signaled hamsat...But I guess I'll never know!!
If any part is in my garage, I find SOME way to use it.... Most of my fun in ham radio...

I get the two piece type at various hamfests. They are fairly easy to assemble and are inexpensive. Drawback is I had to make up the trimming dimensions myself. If someone has a manufacturers drawing that would be a big help. 73 Harvey, K5HV
