Hi all,
I was just looking over the VUCC award application and noticed that they now charge 20 cents per QSO. Is this fee only applicable if cards are sent to HQ for submission or in general even if you take them to a card checker? Thanks in advance!
73,
Jeff WB3JFS
Hi Jeff,
After you mentioned that, I went and took a look at the VUCC application (http://www.arrl.org/files/file/Awards/VUCC%20App%202011.pdf) and sure enough it says, "enclose 20 cents per QSO" (bottom of page). So, you send $12 for postage to get your award mailed to you, $7 for ARRL members or $12 for non-members for the award, 20 cents/QSO, and you also need to send along sufficient postage to get your QSL cards returned to you if you mail them to a card checker. I don't remember paying that much when I got mine. I wonder if this applies to endorsements??

Hi Zack and all,
From the way I read it, it applies to the initial application as well as
endorsements. It doesn't descriminate between them.
BTW, for those looking and wondering as well. It states "20 cents per QSO", not "20 cents per grid". So if you have a QSO with multiple grids, say 2 grids or 4 grids, it still only cost 20 cents. Don't count the grids as a single QSO, unless the QSO was with a single grid. It'll save yourself a few cents.
From the looks of it, my initial application could cost me nearly $50.

Hi Jeff and the BB,
I just found both applications on the ARRL website. (the old form, date 2009, and the new form, date Jan. 2011) see following website:
http://www.arrl.org/files/file/Awards/VUCC%20App%202011.pdf
It looks like instead of a flat $10 fee, they now have gone to multiple fees for postage, the application and number of contacts. If I'm comprehending this correctly, if you apply for additional VUCC sticker, in the US and a ARRL member, and turn in 60 cards, it would cost you the following:
$1 postage, $7 application fee, and $.20 x 60 = $12 for a total of $20.00
Is this correct? I welcome all replies, if not.

Sounds like to me all the better to find a Card Checker in your area before sending anything to ARRL. Save on postage, etc. Hopefully the Card Checker wont want his cut too now? Sign of the times, it looks like to me...

Do you need to pay the card checker the $.20/QSO, or is that only if you send them directly to ARRL??
I agree with Rick - the wording is not very clear.

no, if you take or send your cards to an arrl awards manager (i am one for vucc, was and 5bwas), you do not pay anything other than a check to the arrl for the cost of your award plus the postage to return your cards to you (if you did not take them in person). we are not allowed to accept any fee for checking cards, we volunteer to do this for other hams. i became an awards manager long ago when there was none in houston and i had to send my cards to san antonio. i have checked many a card since then.

Hi John and all,
From what I recall with the old VUCC application it was discouraged to send
cards to HQ and to use local card checkers for VUCC. With the new application it seems like they will accept cards at HQ for VUCC but there is a cost. However, it doesn't state what to do if you take them to a card checker? On Thursday, I had sent an e-mail to Bill Moore, head of the awards division at ARRL HQ, and haven't receive a reply back as of Saturday morning. In any case, we'll find out sooner or later.

Although I already have VUCC satellite (#200 wow!), for those that don't yet what happens when you have enough confirmed grids via both paper cards and LoTW?
Will card checkers go to the trouble of looking at your LoTW account and compare them to the paper cards, or should the paper cards go to ARRL for credit towards VUCC?
