There are a number of good inexpensive SDR receivers out there but I don’t see anyone who is successfully controlling them with software such as satpc32. I believe the FunCube Dongle can be controlled by satpc32.

It's not about the receiver, it's about the software used with the receiver. HDSDR and Gqrx can both be controlled by external programs. I have made a couple of QSOs using computer control with Gqrx, Gpredict, a FUNcube Dongle Pro+, and an FT-817. I know others have used HDSDR with SatPC32 successfully.
