Hamvention - Field Day Ready Set Go 2 Questions
The ARRL is running a Field Day forum at the Hamvention. I will not be able to attend, but suspect there is someone on this list that will.
Would you be so kind as to ask the ARRL representatives two questions "on the record" about the ARRL Field Day rules for satellites?
I have been told from several sources the ARRL rules allow one contact per any FM satellite.
==== First question of two ==== Does this mean one per each FM voice satellite, or only one FM voice contact period?
==== Second question ==== I have also been told the ARRL rules consider 'satellite' as one band. In other words if I work W1AW on FO-29 SSB, then working W1AW on JO-97 SSB would be a dupe. Is that correct? (I understand in the AMSAT contest it is NOT a dupe.)

Why on the record? What is that for, the rules are posted online at the ARRL website under Field Day.
For many years, the AMSAT Field Day has had the rule that you can only turn in one contact per FM satellite. The reasoning behind this was that many satellite operators use the SSB/CW birds to make contacts where space is available. An FM satellite only allows one contact at a time. This leaves the FM birds so that those needing the ARRL bonus points have a chance to make them. You are always welcome to make as many contacts on any FM satellite as you would like. However, you can only turn in one contact per FM satellite for AMSAT scoring. The ARRL adopted this rule a year or two ago.
Now, for the second question. You are correct, the ARRL considers operating satellites as one band and thus, you can contact me, KK5DO, on one satellite and that will be it for any other satellite we happen to meet on. You will need to work different stations and all those will count towards your score for the ARRL field day. Now, as far as AMSAT field day goes, we consider each satellite to be a "separate band". In fact we go as far as saying if a satellite has multiple bands available you can work a station on each band. Like 2m/70cm as well as 2m/1.2g or AO-7 that might come up in mode 2m/70cm and then after it comes into sunlight again might be in 2m/10m. Or a satellite that has 2m/70cm mode B as well as a store-and -forward bbs, you can make a contact on both.
I will be posting the AMSAT Field Day rules for this year this weekend and they will also appear in the upcoming issue of the AMSAT Journal. Our rules will basically be the same as last year as the ARRL has relaxed the rules for class D stations and operating from home.

Bruce, Yes, the rules are on the ARRL website. Unlike the AMSAT rules they are a bit vague. The FM rule says ” 7.3.7.1 Stations are limited to one (1) completed QSO on any single channel FM satellite. “ Can we make a QSO on AO-91 and a QSO on SO-50 and count them both? I have been given conflicting answers from ARRL reps (all off the record) and would like to hear the official ruling. Limited to one QSO on only one FM satellite – or – one QSO per each FM satellite, would be more clear.
The multi-satellite rule is vague as well. 7.3.7 says “…Satellite QSOs also count for regular QSO credit. Show them listed separately on the summary sheet as a separate "band." You do not receive an additional bonus for contacting different satellites, though the additional QSOs may be counted for QSO credit unless prohibited under Rule 7.3.7.1.“ So it’s clear you can claim the bonus only once, but QSOs on multiple birds is again vague. Again, the AMSAT rules have been clear, but ARRL rules not so much.
The AMSAT rules have been very clear, I just wish the ARRL would follow the AMSAT lead there.
When I saw they were having a forum, I thought it would be an opportunity to clarify it.
