I'm not trying to criticize the people doing the work on remodeling the store. Stuff happens and without a full-time IT staff, it happens slowly. I get it. It's fine. More time is needed and that's OK - no one is going to die and if you *really* need something from the store, you can call the office (where there is a full-time staff person!).
But for goodness' sake, can we take the date, now >1 week in the past, off the placeholder page? Just put "closed for remodeling" or something.
Peter,
Stop looking at the page if it bothers you that much. What's with the constant nit-picking about EVERYTHING?

As an former outsider looking in. If I am looking to join a group of active amateurs involved with satellite work and someone said "hey you should look at AMSAT, they are the ones who put those things up in space" and I went to the website and I saw a very out of date "store is inactive until (insert date that is way past due)" i would assume that AMSAT is defunct and never look back. At best I would not believe the person that told me this is the organization that puts stuff in space if they can't even keep their website up to date. It is this kind of thing that discourages new members. There is also zero reason members should be attacking other members for bringing this up.
I how ever would not be discouraged if i saw "we are in the process of an upgrade. please call Martha for assistance" with no date. I would just call Martha. Having an out of date date looks super mickey mouse. I am with Peter and Andrew on this

Working on the website would not be subject to such restrictions.
As stated on the website:
If you have hardware or software technical skills, and proven experience directly applicable to satellite design, please contact the AMSAT Vice President of Engineering http://ww2.amsat.org/?page_id=1121(N0JY). Due to the American International Traffic in Arms Regulations http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Traffic_in_Arms_Regulations (ITAR) you must be either a US Citizen or a permanent resident (ITAR Qualifications http://www.amsat.org/www.fas.org/spp/starwars/offdocs/itar/p120.htm). *This is not our reflection on foreign citizens, but is required by existing US law. Recent changes suggest that this restriction may soon be lifted or at least modified. If and when this happens, we will be delighted to be able to again work freely with our foreign colleagues.*
This is only for working directly on our satellite projects and is due to US federal law. It is certainly not a reflection of our feelings towards non-Americans. We would love for anyone worldwide to be able to work on any AMSAT project without restriction.

This is not our reflection on foreign citizens, but is required by existing US law. Recent changes suggest that this restriction may soon be lifted or at least modified. If and when this happens, we will be delighted to be able to again work freely with our foreign colleagues.
This is only for working directly on our satellite projects and is due to US federal law. It is certainly not a reflection of our feelings towards non-Americans. We would love for anyone worldwide to be able to work on any AMSAT project without restriction.

More time is needed and that's OK - no one is going to die and if you *really* need something from the store, you can call the office (where there is a full-time staff person!).
But for goodness' sake, can we take the date, now >1 week in the past, off the placeholder page? Just put "closed for remodeling" or something.

It would be nice if outdated pages are marked as such. This has been voiced before.
However, I do not have the time to offer to fix such things so I hold my tongue. I prefer only to criticize if I have a suggestion and the ability to make such things better.
If the state of the website offends you so, why not ask how you can help to make it better?

Peter,
Stop looking at the page if it bothers you that much. What's with the constant nit-picking about EVERYTHING?

I'm not trying to criticize the people doing the work on remodeling the store. Stuff happens and without a full-time IT staff, it happens slowly. I get it. It's fine. All,
I know it's been said many times before - we are all volunteers. Joe does IT. Since Joe is the only one who has volunteered to do that, it's up to when he can get it done. (Insert many times before mentioned plug for volunteer help here.) Normally things go pretty well but life takes precedence over hobby as I'm sure you all know. Joe is buried and will fix the store ASAP.
I am a stickler for detail and so I don't like to see things that aren't "right" when they could be, on the other hand it can't be because Joe is busy existing so we understand. On behalf of AMSAT I apologize for any grief but I ask you all to understand as well.
In the meantime the date really is kind of irrelevant, while I agree it would be nice for it to say something meaningful the fact that the store is closed remains the same. Kinda like going to a shop where the sign says "Will Return at 1PM" and it's 1:30 PM so what do you do? Wait, or come back later... cursing the sign won't get you inside. But wait! In this case you have an alternative, please just call Martha. Unless you were just planning on browsing, she can get you whatever you wanted from the store. She does it anyway, when you order online.
Thanks!

But for goodness' sake ...
Yeah, for goodness sake ... [DELETE] ... and, now back to online research on which RV I'll get for going to hamfests and national parks. Much more rewarding. Oh, where will the mobile ham station and laptop go? And, how about flamingo themed shower doors in the lavatory?
