At FN-30, booming SSTV signal, three signal bursts!

Very loud SSTV for around 30 seconds in JO02 when mobile. No other transmission heard in the 10 minute window.

Very very loud SSTV received in IO75 (Glasgow) with a J-Pole in a tree-shrouded back garden!
http://www.gjcp.net/~gordonjcp/na1ss.png
Equipment was a homebrew J-pole on a 12-foot "mast", Trio TR-7730 transceiver, and qsstv on my laptop. I recorded the pass so I could fiddle about with decoding parameters later.
I started to catch another transmission just as the satellite dropped out of range at about 8 degrees elevation - if I had hooked up the quad I might have caught it.
My first successful SSTV decode, too!
I can make the captured .wav file available if anyone wants it.

SSTV, Need your help in Fine-Tuning SSTV on ISS
Hi all, We need your help in fine tuning the SSTV system on ISS.
Here is how you can help.
VOX Delay: There is an intermittent problem with the VOX box that controls the transmitter switch on the radio. When the VOX hears sound coming from the Laptop, it will turns on the D700 Transmitter. When the sound stops, the transmitter should shutdown in 2-3 seconds.
We need you to listen to the end of the SSTV signal and time the delay. Suggest you also Audio or video tape record the sessions so we can get accurate timing values. The first question is: How long does the Transmitter stay keyed after the end of an image?
What is the slide show delay set for? I have requested it be set for approximately 5 minutes for now, until we make sure we are not driving the transmitter too hard. We do not want the radio to over heat.
Audio Levels: For those of you that are experts in SSTV, please try to guess the Audio levels of the Down link. Is the audio too high or too low. If we turn the Audio level down a bit, we may be able to reduce the number of VOX hangs.
Slant Adjust: The Downlink SSTV slant adjustment has not been set on SpaceCam1. We the experts familiar with Adjusting SSTV slant, to Audio record the Images coming down live and play those images back into your system and see if you can calculate the slant adjustment value. Since SpaceCam1 is based on CPIX, you should be able to use CPIX as your test bed and calculate the slant correction factor.
Other Tuning Suggestions Welcome.
Sincerely

Both the voice and SSTV audio levels are excellent, almost studio quality, which means you can certainly turn down the SSTV audio a bit and still get good reception.
Will try and time the SSTV TX hold time on the next pass if active.
He is certainly working a lot of people, so when will the uplink be "officially" released?
Alan WA4SCA
We should not do any up-linking until we have verified the Image Slant settings are "close enough" to get reasonable images.
SpaceCam1 also has a built-in SSTV Repeater, and will Save images by "Call-Sign" (if your SSTV program supports "SSID" such as CPIX).
Perhaps as a general test, we could ask ARISS for an Uplink Only day, and let SpaceCam1 run in Auto receive for a specific day. Then have everyone for that 24 hour period send Robot-36 images up to ISS and have the crew take a peek the next day.
A receive only day, would not cause any thermal problems. It would also tell us how closely we have tweaked the Slant.

Miles,
Maybe, but Richard is clearly conducting uncoordinated voice QSOs now. Hence the interest in the voice uplink.

Hi All:
Today's images from ISS are courtesy of the Kenwood VC-H1 communicator. There are two SSTV systems on board ISS which have gone through the ARISS/NASS/RSA approval process. Those are the SpaceCam1 Software solution and the Kenwood VC-H1 hardware solution.
On October 15, the ISS crew switched over to the Kenwood VC-H1 and set the camera in a window on ISS. The VC-H1 was then configured to take a snapshot every few minutes and send the image back to Earth (Robot-36 format).
The easiest way to tell the difference is by looking at the Text overlay. The VC-H1 will display the name NA1SS in big blue letters. The SpaceCam1 software solution will display the call sign and time stamp on the bottom of the image.
SpaceCam1 will also support many USB cameras for similar Live snap shots. At the present time we have not been able to test with any of the existing USB cameras on board ISS. In theory the crew should be able to connect a USB camera to the Laptop with SpaceCam1 and also select Slide show mode via Camera OR Disk rive.
The VC-H1 project is from the ARISS team, I am not sure which specific individuals we have to thank for getting that project approved so quickly.
So please enjoy the show.

Richard should now be working folks on the standard ISS uplink frequencies of 145.20 for ITU region 1 (Europe, Africa and Russia) and 144.49 for ITU regions 2 & 3 (Everywhere else). http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/station/reference/radio/
