Best dualband FM rigs
What are considered the best dualband FM rigs for working the mode J FM sats-like AO27, SO50, and AO51? Which hear the birds the best on 70cm FM?
73s John AA5JG
Yaesu FT-736R
Nothing comes close in FM and its also very good in SSB.
FM has 3 triple conversion RX and Normal and narrow FM filters. Easy to use Sat mode switch for Doppler correction.
I have owned both Yaesu FT-736R and the Icom IC-910.
Yaesu FT-736R vrs IC-910
Easier to use. Doppler correction very easy. 25 watt output make it easy to pair up with external amps. FM Rx great, plus the narrow FM filters (great for city work) Does not require external Pre-amps, as does the 910. Cost 50% to 75% less than a 910

The best FM-only dual band rig I've tried for sats is the Kenwood TM-V7. Hears in UHF (and VHF) like a champ.

My old Kenwood TM-731A seems to work fine; has 2 antenna ports, so either seperate 2m or 70cm antennas or get a diplexer. +35 watts out. I am sure there are newer rigs, but cant complain about this old critter.

One of the new rigs was the Yaseu TH-D7A. I use this and it works very well. They are no longer produced, but you occasionally see one posted here on the BB and on ebay. There was one on here just a few days ago. You have to move fast on them since they are very popular.

You are correct. My apologies. Too many Yaseu rigs around here ... I get confused .., hi.

Old TH77E (full duplex) by Kenwood could be a good choice.
Matt SQ7DQX
The Kenwood TM-D710 does very well. And if not on the birds, APRS and Packet either in-band or cross-band.

John, I just saw an advertisement in QST (page 6 February issue) for a Yaesu FTM-350R dual band rig that may be interesting. It has 2m & 440, with 1200/9600 packet. Other features are bluetooth capability as well as APRS/GPS, as well as other features. It's not available yet in the U.S. It still has to get FCC approval. Looks like we'll have an option to the Kenwood TM-710. Has anyone outside the US had any experience with it yet? ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Geiger" aa5jg@yahoo.com To: amsat-bb@amsat.org Sent: Wednesday, January 27, 2010 12:40 Subject: [amsat-bb] Best dualband FM rigs

Hi All,
They had them on the table at the Jackson, MS hamfest yesterday. They have a very big display that would be easy to read in a mobile install. Price was $599 for this dealer. For those of us that use 220mhz, we were disappointed that it only has 1 watt on that band.
73 to all,
Rick WA4NVM
