Back to Eric's original question: "Where is the "ham spirit" these days?"
Well, I ask, WHEN did the true spirit of ham radio CHANGE to the point where we can demean fellow hams in public message groups - WITHOUT simply contacting an "offending" ham privately to see if we could help them with their system?
A simple email message to the "offending" station asking if he was able to hear the bird ... If he has had any problems with the FM birds in the past ... and find out if he knew he was accidentally stepping on another ham ... THAT'S what any responsible amateur radio licensee should have done FIRST. And THEN write up the experience here. Something like ...
"Hey, guys and gals. Was working SO-50 earlier this week, and booming in with a strong signal was K6LCS. That's the good news. The bad news is that he was stepping on everyone else - as if he could not hear the downlinks from the bird. I called him up (his phone number is all over his Web sites) and we both identified the problem: a shorted earpiece cable forced him to work without his normal receive audio setup. He profusely apologized ... and he is not really a "repeat offender." LESSON LEARNED: Purchase quality audio accessories!"
Instead, the original message criticizes a fellow ham ... and two more fellow hams publicly chime in with, "Way to go, Eric!" - before finding out the facts of the matter.
Call me "old school," I guess. But I am not changing.

Maybe we should bring back the guillotine?

I say we all mellow out and listen to some songs from Lynyrd Skynyrd, especially one song in particular. "Don't Ask Me No Questions." It'll probably solve some of the ongoing issues and show a perspective as to why this is getting out of hand.

I am back to contacting schools/museums for NASA regarding their upcoming ARISS projects ...
Issues? What issues? (grin)

Don't Ya just love how FM LEO's bring out the best in everyone? ;-)

After doing a little research I think Eric is more than qualified to know what Amateur Radio is all about and how the Ham Spirit has changed. After working HF for over 20 years he is well aware. He has a very impressive looking Satellite set up and I am sure he could hear his own signal quite well. Of course some of the self proclaimed expert instructors don't think you need any of that fancy gear and continue to encourage the bare minimum in equipment resulting in these Alligators!
A day doesn't pass where someone is out there calling CQ and obviously can't hear thier own signal, or anyone else for that matter. I have sent numerous friendly e-mails with no responses, but again, a majority don't have an e-mail listed on QRZ.
Full duplex should be the only way satellite operations are taught, and not doing it should be considered malicious interference!
73 Craig W1MSG Back to the SSB Birds for me !
Hi Craig, and others, I use full duplex from the first day that I use the ham satellites. I also prefer the ssb birds but if I am working handheld with an arrow antenna I can only work the fm sats for now :-( with 2 portables, full duplex as it should be. If Jean-Marie had wait for about 20 seconds, then there was no problem, but constantly calling cq on top of anybody else makes it more difficult to get the qso done. I got an email from M6DNU that evening, also complaining about the constant cq calling and thanking me for my patience. Let this be a lesson for everybody, if two stations are exchanging a report en grid locator, please let them do that and when the qso is over, THEN call cq.
I seem to have stepped on some people's toes and I apoligize for that. I was frustrated when I wrote to this reflector because constant calling cq on the fm sats is a common problem here in Europe. I don't understand why people are doing that. What is the point of calling cq when two other persons are in qso? (for only a few seconds!) It's just a waste of time. And everybody gets frustrated because 1 person is keeping the sat occupied and nobody can make a contact.
Once again, my apoligies to Jean-Marie. I hope he will forgive me. 73, Eric.

The interesting thing is that this issue was brought up and caused by three EU hams. Why and how this type of thing always seems to degenerate into a commentary on the general ham condition and a personal war wages between people who were not even in the original event is an interesting statement in itself. I wonder if I can get a refund on my membership. We surely do need more satellites if nothing else than to spread you guys out.

I'm sorry Clint, but this is the way I see it: If you can't hear the downlink, stop calling cq because you won't hear anyone to talk to. I know that station for a long time and this wasn't the first time. When I call cq on a lineair transponder, Jean-Marie is also there to call also cq on the same frequency, why? I then just move to another qrg, problem solved :-) But on a fm sat that isn't the case. You get frustrated after a while. 73, Eric.

Absolutely! If you cannot hear the bird, do not transmit.
... which totally negates this nonsense about only ever working full-duplex on the FM sats. If you can hear the sat, you can hit the sat.
If I wanted to go down the full-duplex route, I'd use Skype.

Hi Eric, ON4HF
This is why I suggest you to send an email to Jean-Marie f2il@orange.fr informing him about the problem.
If you only complain on AMSAT-BB than Jean-Marie will never know about the QRM that he is producing to you on satellites because it seems that F2IL don't read and don't write on AMSAT-BB
BTW, F2IL is not producing QRM to me on linear transponders....why ?
