I just downloaded HRD and am having trouble figuring out How to look at more than one satelite at a time in the Satellite part of the program.

From the menu select Satellite, New Window and select a satellite.
Do this for each satellite of interest.
In any of the window click Show Tracks and select Selected.

Thanks Simon. I guess it just stalls under the load. The windows title bar says "not responding" trying to close the program gives the familiar "program not responding" dialog box. Leave the computer for a bit and it eventually resumes tracking until any key is pressed then stalls again. I realise that simultaneously tracking 85 satellites is of little use but other programs seem to manage it.

Simon and all,
I have been using V 4.1 Beta for a few months, and my sense is that all of the multitasking HRD requires is taxing the processor on my Acer Aspire One netbook beyond its capacity. I may be wrong about that, but I suspect that's what's going on.
Simon, please correct me if this is wrong - but I believe that V 4.1 (beta) requires that radios be connected to the main HRD suite, and then also connected to the Satellite Tracker, in order to provide computer control for Doppler tuning. If that is, indeed, the case, I wonder whether it's possible to enable Satellite Tracker's radio-related functions without connection to HRD? I suspect that if I was able to connect my radios directly to Satellite Tracker without using HRD, that the netbook might be able handle the load.
I enjoy Satellite Tracker very much, but it has locked up my computer at the very worst of times (e.g., just a few seconds before acquisition of AO-7 when I had a schedule with EA8AVI in an attempt to add Africa to my continents-worked list). I chose the netbook for my ham radio use because of its size, and because it was bundled with Windows XP, not Vista. I fear that the decision has me comitted to a computer with a processor that may not have enough muscle to do everything HRD/Satellite Tracker asks it to do.
Regardless ... thank you so much for all of your work on HRD and Satellite Tracker. HRD is an amazing suite of software.

Which beta version of 4.1 are you using? I found that I had the same problem until 4.1 build 1985. Satellite stuff can be accessed without a rig hooked up. I did find that resources can really get eaten up by HRD when doing satellite stuff. If the description of HRD V5.0 is correct, it may ease up the overhead on computers by not trying to do so many things at once (some of which you may not need).

Hey Reid,
Thanks for your note. Using the same package here - V 4.1, Build 1985.
And yes, you can access Satellite Tracker without connecting radios to it - but you can't connect radios to it without ALSO connecting them to HRD. Therein could lie the problem.
DM780 is useable without connecting radios to HRD. I routinely do that when I'm working digital modes in HF.
My only interest in computer connection for Satellite Tracker is Doppler control. I would like to be able to connect directly to it and use it as a "stand-alone" without HRD involved. I believe that could/would solve the issues I experience here.

Gotcha! You are correct. maybe the independences that were discussed with 5.x will take care of that problem. It would be nice to bring up just the satellite portion only. I have been so use to using WISP32 since my SATGATE days that I use it most of the time except on my newer radios. HRD indeed is very good and looks even more promising for the future. I have downloaded the 5.x beta version but have yet to install it to see how it does.

Hi,
One thing I'm doing at the moment is reducing the load from HRD, especially with satellite tracking.
The redrawing of the screen is not as efficient as it should be, I'll sort this out soon, I've also seen very high CPU load.
I also have a netbook for testing - all this hardware I have to buy costs a lot but I hope it'll be worth it in the end.

As a dedicated (but frustrated!) long time user of HRD Satellite stuff with my TS2000 my own experience is that the new version 5 is still a problem. However it would appear that the experience varies across hardware platform.
I know Simon has taken note of this from my posting on his forum.
I find the tracking, even when reduced to its most basic form, consumes huge amounts of cpu time. I have also noticed that when connected to the radio (via HRD) Doppler updating (and other radio functions) fails during periods of fast change, i.e. when the sat passing overhead. Whilst HRD maintains its functionality to the radio and to the tracking module it can be a pig to get the tracking module to take back control.

Well,
When I get to this stage I will offer to help anyone using teamview - I did this yesterday with a beta-tester in Holland and in just a few minutes found a serious resource leak. The main problem with netbooks is the graphics chip isn't too fast, but I do have some poor code in the satellite tracking anyway :)
My general aim is to be able to run HRD 5.0 on a netbook driving a 24" display.

Hi Simon,
Let me begin with saying that I love your software. The only thing I mis is a clear piece of documentation. For exmaple I am wondering what the difference in behavior is between repeater/split and liniear inv. I have asked this question on this email list and also on the HRD forum but no satisfying anwer.
I also visited the wiki page but there also no answer.
Can you answer this question? I can imagine that there is a difference in split versus liniear inv with regard to doppler behavior.
Hope to hear from you.

Hi,
Repeater is FM (AO-51), linear inverting is SSB (VO-52), Split is ISS when on FM.

Thanks for the reply,
But how does HRD sat track know the difference between linear and non linear birds?
The inverting part is done manual by selecting an other modulation. (would be nice if that was also programmable together with ctcss)
But when you have a sat like DO-64 when rx goes up tx should go down this wil have influence on the main slider when this is used, but there is no way to select this when creating a frequency in the repeater/split linear part.
And the documentation?, is there more then just the wiki pages?
