I also run 50 watts out of my 20A fused 12v outlet's on several vehicles including 3 new Honda's in the last 5 years and now a Mercedes. All are specked for 20A. I'm sure most new cars are. One thing worth mentioning though, The quality of the 12v cigarette lighter plug can be an issue. I now use the powerpole CigBuddy's exclusively. In my Jeep I run a TS2000 on HF and VHF. I installed a 50A capable feed directly from the battery to the back of the Jeep to power the radio, and also to if needed for a power-winch to get me out of trouble or haul a boat onto a trailer...

Jeff, I think my brain cramp had me thinking 12V/120W was 10W whenit should have been 10A!!!! That's the way the Toyota Corolla thatI recently rented in Reno was labeled on the AUX JK in the centerconsole. For my Mitsubishi which I use for roving, I ran 12 Ga. wiredirectly to the battery fused at 20A on both sides to the back whereI operate the radio. During SAT passes, I leave the car running tokeep the voltage up. Sorry for the confusion. Hi Bob, yup you have to run the vehicle to run any power on a sat pass. My 9700 shuts down if I try to run over 25 watts or so on 2m or 70cm. It can get a bit annoying standing in the exhaust fumes on a hot day...

May be worth investing in, as I did, a secondary 100Amp lorry battery, in the boot. Which I had a trickle charge on when not in use. I also rigged up a small solar panel which would trickle when engine off but not transmitting.
At one point I had a 12v 7.5Amp dry cell attached as well but it had no real purpose.

If you go the "secondary battery in the boot" route, consider using a battery designed for the task rather than a regular car/lorry battery which is designed for short bursts of high current with minimal discharge before recharge. Also consider a battery boost device such as the MFJ-4416C so your radio sees 13.8 volts even if the battery is discharged to a lower value.
Of course if you already have an extra battery available and your radio is happy at 12.2VDC, this is unnecessary.

As I operate out of the vehicle maybe 2 or 3 times a year I don't have a need, with the engine off, for a more stable 13.8 v power source.
