Does it have a serial port? A Sound card?

No standard serial port, but 3 x USB...
There is in fact a serial port for development, which can be used.. more here: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Serial_adapters
A Sound card?
Phone In, Headphone Out using an AC97-compatible audio audio subsystem.... http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Hardware_specification#Integrated_peripherals
It's a great idea and neat device..
So.... Give One and Get One !!
Starting on November 12th in North America..

I forgot to mention, that there are already projects using the sound interface as a measurement device with the ability to even sample DC voltages with a fairly linear range. This would make indeed a nice modem for various purposes, packet radio, aprs, psk, etc... in addition to the build-in WLAN intrerface...

As Tom said, there would be a fantastic opportunity if Ham Radio in general jumps on it and provides tools to the Educational community and for the Kids...
Apart from this, since the OPLC has a very low power consumption, it would also be a good replacement for some of the PC's in your radio shack.. Antenna controller, Satellite tracking, etc...

Does the OLPC have a serial port?
No. but it does have 3 x USB... and a sound card.
But since the sound card has been shown to have a DC input capability, it would seem that it could be used as an RS-232 serial port too. Just a little bit-banger software...
The output might not have enough swing to drive other devices, but the input should work. That would be a great capability... For backward compatibility with RS-232 devices out there... A good project for someone...
As I wrote in my original post:

So no need to bit banging...

Well, I just placed my order. Some poor kid will get a (hopefully) useful device to enhance his education, and I'll get one to experiment with. 73, Jim KQ6EA
