I called Martha with this idea today, and she suggested I put it on the b-b, so here it is:
AO-51 has been a real "hoot" for a bunch of hams, including me. judging from their technique and their QSLs, many of these ops are doing the sats for the first time. And probably most of that group do not belong to Amsat. (And they should, you know)
Since FM05 is not easy to find on '51, I've been getting more than a few QSL cards, and have started to ask the question on my return: "How about $ending Amsat a thank-you note?"
Yes, $, not S.
So, my idea is that we should try to get those whom we hear on '51 and who are not members to join Amsat, or at least send a few bucks in. Works either way for me.
For those who would like to try this: Martha has said that she will run calls against the members list and tell us who is NOT a member, if we send her lists of all those we hear on '51. No need to try to talk to all these folks, it's crowded enough.
For my part, I will supply the first 500 39 or 24 cent stamps to put on the the QSLs you would send to those identified as non-members. We should know how or if this will work by the response to the first 500
First goal would be to generate 100 new members or contributors.
I am not a subscriber to the list, so please contact me at amhoner@rtmc.net with comments, criticisms, or offers to help.
Thanks for the bandwidth.

I completely disagree.
You are trying to purposely exclude people because of membership alone, worse by condoning a cruel silence treatment. I don't think that is in the spirit of amateur radio.
How about those of us who made donations to the AO51 project but are not members? I did, and I also dontated to Amsat DL for P3E, as will I for Eagle too. Are you going to join every national body that puts up a bird?
I am all for people volunteering to $end a thank you note, if and when they feel able, but please don't engage in high school infantile games of not speaking to people on financial status. That's a cruel form of peer group pressure.
Thankyou

Simon,
You may have misinterpreted the suggestion. I didn't read that Mike proposes that we not engage in a QSO with someone identified as not being a member of Amsat. I read that he suggests that QSL cards sent to people who are not members will contain a written solicitation for donations to Amsat. I believe his reference to, "... not talking to all these folks because it is crowed enough", means that we should not solicit contributions or suggest membership during a QSO.
I also read that Mike is volunteering to provide postage for 500 QSL cards containing a note asking someone to consider joining Amsat or make a donation.
I may be reading the suggestion incorrectly myself. However, I did not read it as a suggestion to treat someone differently if the are not an Amsat member.

Mike & Randy,
On reading this a few times again, I believe you are right.
I apologize if any offence has been caused. Unfortunately the wording gave me that impression, and a rush of angry blood ran to the head.
Mike, sorry if I picked up the wrong spin on this. The plan is an admirable suggestion. I really did misinterpret the email, and believed that you would not engage in QSO's with non donors. I can see now what you meant, and you never had such intent. Regards

Hi Mike,
"How about $ending Amsat a thank-you note?"
There used to be an AMSAT "QSL Insert" along the similar lines of your thinking.
The old version is still on-line at: http://www.amsat.org/amsat/amsat-na/membership.html and then scroll down near the bottom of the page to QSL Insert.
But that was 2003 so its likely a few things on that page are now out-of-date. Perhaps it could be used as a model for an updated QSL Insert? Hope this helps!

Martha will come up short if the current (2003 version) is used. The price has gone up!

Can we do this for FO-29 and start a campaign for JAMSAT? another one for VO-52, another one for SO- 50, and what about individual who fund their own project with their own $?.
It was another BAD idea as many who are not AMSAT members anymore quit for this very same reason BAD decisions made by AMSAT as this last one to cancelled S mode downlink on Eagle.
Implementing a near toll system for AO-51 users in contrary to the HAM spirit. I understand as you said "I am not a subscriber to the list" but you are if you send this message and please read back a bit some past thread on AMSAT-BB.
From an outsider we can only see this uncontrolled administrative move as another lack of BOD
management and supervision.
As another one ask you what you will do with those who are ONLY funding a specific project?
Put your money where the needs are and in a logical way send your $ or S to P3E this way you will really promote the real ham SPIRIT not the politics...

I find myself again defending an idea authored by someone else. Why? Because it is an honorable attempt to advertise for the organization that provides this forum (the amsat-bb). This is not an idea specific to AO-51, but a generic plan to increase exposure for Amsat. AO-51 is only a suggested test platform to see if the "advertising" campaign produces favorable return.
I do not believe this idea for a fund raising opportunity has anything to do with a specific satellite, the raging S mode downlink debate, or the Board of Directors.
From an outsider we can only see this uncontrolled administrative move as another lack of BOD management and supervision.
Mr. Honer is an individual, who may or may not be a member of Amsat himself that proposed an idea to the readers of amsat-bb. His original thread says nothing about the BOD.
Put your money where the needs are and in a logical way send your $ or S to P3E this way you will really promote the real ham SPIRIT not the politics...
The statement above sounds like a political statement for P3E. Everyone should (and will) support whichever organizations and projects they feel meet their personal wishes. Amsat-bb is the forum to lobby for a mode S downlink, or whatever mode someone may wish to support. This particular thread is not the correct place to complain about the BOD or proposed modes on Eagle.
For the record... I am a new Amsat member. I never have experienced AO-40 or any HEO satellite. I am a member because of a random discovery that an "EasySat", like AO-51 can be worked with very limited equipment or expertise. I have no technical knowledge to offer or deep pockets for generous donation. Hopefully, this situation may change in the future, having discovered a fascinating and fun mode of operation. I am thankful that many people have already volunteered their time and money to support these endeavors. Mr. Honer seems to be simply offering an idea to support the hobby we all enjoy.
