OK, a newbee question about interfacing rotors. I have a Yaesu 5500 and I run PCSat32. What do I need between the rotor and the computer? I would like a few options. Do I need the Yaesu 232 interface box or will a generic box do the job. If a generic box will work, which are the best for satellite work with PCSat32?
Tnx 73 Bill K3SV
Bill, There is a nice interface being sold by AMSAT - LVB tracker box...Only need an RS232 or USB to operate it running SatPC32... You didn't mention what rig you have - you can interface with that via SatPC32 also - See the ad at the AMSAT website... Good luck, Dee, NB2F

Hi Bill,
You're going to love automated tracking...
The current favorite in my shack is the LVB Tracker, available from just a bare board to a completely assembled, plug/play box with backlit LCD--assembled masterfully from one of AMSAT's own members--Mike, WB8CXO!
http://www.amsat-na.com/store/category.php?c=Hardware
AMSAT-UK sells a kit of all parts, too! Just visit their store online as well...

On the LVB tracker - do you know if it (can) support GS 232B protocol?

Jeff,
Yes!
Here's the main design features:
o Inexpensive! Basic device without any options is $12 for the components
o Several physical interface options including RS-232, USB and TCP/IP over 10/100 Ethernet
o Uses standard software interface (currently Yaesu GS-232)
o Cross-platform compatibility - Windows, Linux, BSD, Mac
o Compatible with existing real-time prediction programs such as Wisp and Nova
o Open source
o Integrated firmware programmer for easy installation and upgrade
o No requirement to solder SMT devices
o Bidirectional interface

OK that is good news - I now there are some slight differences between GS 232A and GS 232B and it sounds like it can handle both.
Time to order! Jeff

Hi Jeff,
It doesn't recognize the entire protocol set, just the basic ones to move the unit.

Love my LVB Tracker! But why does Amsat-NA only offer the LVB Tracker complete or bare board?
Why don't they offer the same options as Amsat-UK (basic kit, full kit, etc.)?

Bill,
I will second Dee's recommendation of the LVB tracker for amateur satellite tracking. We always have it running with SATPC32 at the AMSAT booth at Dayton. The Yaesu interface box is a basic, solid, but expensive unit. Both use a standard command syntax, and are supported by many other programs.
The FT-847 is supported very well by SATPC32. Erich has all of its quirks figured out. With SATPC32, an FT-847, and an LVB tracker, you can concentrate on communicating.

I'm using the ERC-R, it's a little cheaper than the LVB Tracker, and I had it at my door in a week.
