As of February 23, 2007, Our Old Friend "morse code" has now slipped into history as a requirement for a U.S. Amateur License. The tones and burps in the lower portions of the HF bands will become more and more silent as those that remember CW start to become silent keys themselves. "Silent Key" will go by the wayside as well. As a longtime Extra, I can honestly say that getting up to speed was an excitement all its own. Just 5 WPM for my Novice was a thrill learning those mysterious tones. I for one, can certainly see it both as a defunct digital mode and a unique mode to operate pulling out a QSO from those melodius tones. Ditty dum dum ditty will have a narrower meaning from this time on.
That's the cycle of life could be ARRL will also adjust in his field day rules...1 point per QSO phone and CW? How they can live in the past? it is not the Antique Radio Relay League!

Then CW enthusiasts need to work at conveying that excitement to forthcoming generations of hams, now that the artificial "affirmative action" preferences for the mode have been removed from the licensing requirements in the US.
If CW dies off in a world where the likes of Hellschriber are still used, then something is very wrong indeed. If that happens, we can reasonably conclude the licencing requirement kept CW on life support long after it was brain-dead.
But personally, I doubt that's the case...and I'm not alone in this:

I for one know that CW will live for ever. Any weak sig op knows this... just my 2 cents.

Steve, People still raise and breed horses, but very few ride to work on a horse. The FCC just discovered that you do not need to be able to ride a horse to receive a drivers license to opperate a car!

Well, what can be said......
FM versus AM: FM.... fairly immune to static,(Vince Excluded) FM versus AM: FM.... Popular> Show me a ham Who has not got an FM handi. (Vince excluded) Finally, since this started out as CW versus the world has any one realised (Vince excluded) that CW, along with SSB, DSB, ISB, VSB,QAM, and many other AM modulation schemes are ALL AM.....? I utterly fail to see why the modulation system used should define the expertise of any amateur.

Not satisfied to be looking at as "antiques" the CW versus text messaging contest on the Jay Leno tonight show depict to 2 Ham dressed as old 18 century railway telegraphist.
It is hard to prove that some from the very same group are talking on satellites...
But yes i can still copy CW at 15 WPM and i never used to be able to work with a keyer i still have my old radio shack key (the golden one). My coming out...
We all have a bit of "antiques" in each of us but as poison that's the quantity we have in us who is dangerous.
That's probably a better explanation for premature aging than a lack of intense physical an regular body activities as bingo, cards playing, curling, shuffle board and so on...You can add your own one's here :)______________________
