Re: [Keps] Changes to AMSAT-NA TLE Distribution for February 18, 2021
Ray,
Since a short time after its launch it was clear that UVSQ-Sat was either object 47437 or 47438. But the separation between these two objects was too small to be able to determine which one it was.
Gradually these two objects drifted away from each other until their separation was almost 25 km. But in the past couple of weeks they drifted towards each other again. A few days ago they passed each other at a very short distance. If this drift continues, it may be expected that their separation will continue to increase. When this separation has increased to at least 80 km, we should be able to determine which object is UVSQ-Sat. But this will probably take several more weeks.
So although object 47438 is a good candidate, it is way too early to determine with any certainty which object is UVSQ-Sat.

Nico,
I was the one who recommended to Ray to add 47438 as UVSQ-Sat, so I will take credit or blame depending on your point of view. We are caught between competing ideals, having only positively identified objects on the list vs timely dissemination of information. I have been adding UVSQ-Sat as 47438 manually to nasabare.txt for the last couple of weeks since users were asking about its absence.
I hope my decision was the "least worse" one, and that it is not too difficult for users to adjust their configurations if we ultimately need to change to 47437. If a similar situation arises in the future I will coordinate more closely with you.
As ever, thank you for all your good tracking work. One day I will win the lottery, move out of the city, get some land and build an interferometer array, but until then I am relying on you :-)

Thank you Joe,
Of course it is a good idea to offer a preliminary solution by suggesting to use object 47438 for UVSQ-Sat for the time being. It's just that Ray's post seemed to suggest that a positive identification had been made, that provoked my reaction.
No problem, we'll just have to wait a while before we can identify this satellite. And I would not be surprised if it will appear to be object 47438 anyway.

I'll take part of the blame or credit ;) I think I'm the one who initially asked Joe to add 47438 as UVSQSAT, which has subsequently been appropriately changed to UVSQ-SAT for the name. Object 47438 matched so very well, for so very long, that it seemed reasonable to help users by including it, even if it had to be changed later...the idea being, hopefully more people would track it! I haven't tracked it myself for a week or so, too many other matters at hand. But it's fun to copy it at 9600 bpsk! A different "sound" that we are used to hearing!
Your expertise in identification, Nico, is always appreciated. If it's not 47438, I trust you'll let us know ;)

With increased separation doppler measurements now show that UVSQ-Sat is indeed object 47438, 2021-006AB.
