What time AO-7 switch to mode A?
Whenever he/she wants. It cannot be controlled anymore from ground. That's what I know.

Hi Rolf and everyone,
I have just made my fifth satellite QSO which was my very first on AO7.
It's been a great pleasure to hear several CW stations on the same orbit. F3ZD an I6 and F6IBE who answered my CQ call.
FYI: there are several Hungarian stations HA2RD, HA5CH, HA5TI, HA8BI, HA8AR, HA6NN-just to name a few- who are waiting for late evening AO7 orbits and try to catch Canadian and US stations among Europeans.
Have you got any idea how to brush up activity?
CW is the most reliable mode I think, but of course SSB may be more comfortable for those who do not prefer CW to SSB...
Please try to do your best in encouraging your fellows to use AO7 which seems to be the best choice for satellite activity nowadays.
See you on AO7!

AO-7 as far as I know is locked into one mode and it comes on and off depending on the batteries. -Steve VA3SAX

What batteries? More like solar illumination. The question is whether there are eclipses or not. If there are eclipses, then the mode it comes up in is more or less random. If there are no eclipses, then I believe there is an on board timer that switches mode every day or so.
Don't take this as gospel, it's what I've pieced together from reading the bb over the last few years. :)

Not quite. AO-7 resets every time it enters/emerges from eclipse, the batteries have failed open circuit, and the spacecraft runs only off panels and only while in sunlight. It comes up in either mode A or mode B, although it has been favoring mode B lately by a wide margin. A good site to check for the current mode pattern is:
When AO-7 enters a period of no eclipses, the 24 hour mode change timer toggles between A and B just as it was designed to do 32+ years ago. The satellite is _entirely_ hardware driven, and much of it still works when the panels see sunlight, including command functions. The next period of no eclipses begins this fall.
Please enjoy AO-7, and remember to keep your uplinks into AO-7 at levels low enough that they don't "FM" or distort the passband. There are several regular users on the satellite, so making QSOs is usually possible on most passes.
