Hi Dom,
Just give up on trying to explain to some of these new operators! They will never understand what you, Peter, and others on here are talking about....
The way the US has "dumbed down" the license requirements produced them...
GO FOR P3E!!!!

And luckily there aren't too many people who are so full of themselves and view themselves as superior just because they have been in the hobby for so long. How dare newer and god forbid younger people come into your kingdom and claim a spot by virtue of passing a test that not by their fault has been made simpler. Instead of parking your ass on the high horse, get off of it and try to educate in a way that's actually helpful to people. I guess that concept doesn't really appeal to you?
What I see on this list is either the old farts wishing back the good old times of AO-10 etc. or the new crop who are simply happy to work the FM birds with a HT and a store bought antenna. Instead of whining that nobody is paying for your next big toy (P3E) to go into orbit why not try to invoke some passion in the new folks. Light a spark for what it really means to let's say work a linear bird and understand it. The attitude I often see here doesn't really help.
I guess your understanding of the ham spirit of helping others and sharing knowledge has been dumbed down in the process.

I hate to see this old horse beaten again but as a relatively new ham, and new is a relative term, I passed the test the VE Team gave me. I did not petition the FCC to do anything to make things easier or harder for me. Does that mean I'm an idiot? I hope not. I went to my first symposium NOT as a member and it was because of what I found that caused me to BECOME a member. There are people in this organization who are way beyond me in terms of education and capability. But never has anyone in AMSAT held that over my head. From the top on down, everyone I have met at AMSAT-NA is genuine and willing to help anyone with a question. I wish I could say that for the non satellite ham community.

Here's a quick example to show how isolated that view is btw. I changed it up a bit.

Also, aren't the questions devised by radio amateurs?

Hi Michael,
If for driver you mean a taxi driver or someone driving a car than the way the US has "dumbed down" the drivers license requirements can produce more accidents than before.
If the US has "dumbed down" the radio amateurs license requirements with less technical knowledge than before when the Morse Code and many more technical requirements were mandatory than the same problem apply to Amateur Radio.
Don't worry about because the problem is the same in many countries.

The thing is, if you get one of the amateurs that is moaning about the "dumbing down" of the amateur radio exams, and then get them to sit an exam, then there's an excellent chance they'l fail it.
I'm guessing the "dumbing down" brigade are the same ones that I see on 14.070MHz with a signal 3kHz wide. Technology changes. Anyone can do Morse, and I don't see why that's constantly held up as the Big Symptom Of Decay. Can you do PSK31 effectively? No? Time for a spot of learning, then. Knowledge required!
If you don't like all these new people coming into your hobby, then here's the deal. I'll get off the bands with my four-year-old licence (despite having been involved in the hobby for 30 years; it took me until my early 30s for me to have the time and disposable income to actually sit the exam) *if* you'll get off my Internet.
Yes, that's right. Clear off. Cancel your ISP, and go somewhere else with your top-posted, untrimmed replies, 200 names in the To: field and ridiculous multi-line signature emails. Get your bright-red-on-bright-blue-text animated-gif-laden javascript-mouseover-links websites down. Get off the damn Internet, and stop ruining it for those of us who were there first. Oh, and have a read of this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_September
Man, I wish there was *any* kind of licence that people needed to hold before they use the Internet.
