Clint, All,
There were several large wooden slide rules made by Pickett and other manufacturers as teaching props. My son has one that is a straight forward two scale Log-Log that his school gave him. He used to use a slide rule in science and math classes when his classmates all were using programmable calculators. He usually had answers before anyone else did. Sadly, they are just an interesting collector piece for hobby room walls now.

I used a slide rule all through HS and college, but the most long-term and useful long-term thing I learned was how logarithms work.

More than just logarithms. Slide rules force one to understand the problem being solved. It's far too easy to come up with the wrong answer (to 9 digits of "accuracy") using a calculator, with total confidence in the result.

Absolutely re understanding the problem. I learned about logs by using two rulers like a slide rule to realize that we are actually adding if the scale were linear. I think many users at the time did not really know why the slide rule worked for multiply and divide

I used a six-foot long bright yellow Pickett demonstration slide rule in my thermodynamics class in college when others were starting to use HP handheld calculators. Good times. I wish I still had it. I think it would have taken a fair-sized cow to make a case. I still do have my POST "versalog."

He got it from his father, who was an engineer with Globetrotters in Chicago. I don't know any more about it other than that.
