What is a good choice for an L-band uplink antenna for AO-51? Is it possible to use an omni antenna or do you need to be able to point at the satellite?
thanks, jeff AD6EO
I've had good luck with a home-built 18 turn helix antenna on a rotor, sending about 10 watts up 60' of hardline and about 12' of RG-213. Backing off the power I still got a good quieting signal with maybe 5 watts (hard to tell - no meter in the shack), before it started getting a little scratchy. Not sure what that computes to in terms of EIRP.

The KLMs do a good job, though they are linearly polarized, and you get some very sharp, brief dropouts in the uplink.
