I'd like to hear from anyone who has worked FO29 portable. We are working with a group of guys on an expedition to a small island and I'm hoping to take only an IC910H and an Arrow hand held Yagi mounted on a light camera tripod. Clearly I can work SO50 with that, but how about FO29? Will I be able to hear it with that small antenna and no preamp?

Hi Jim- I haven't tried it in just over a year, but I used to work FO-29 with an arrow on a tripod regularly from my car with a 706 and a FT-817 for receive. No preamps. Didn't work everything but worked plenty. Absolutely! That's a fine combination for FO-29, AO-7B, SO-50, and AO-73.

In short, you betcha! I live in an apartment and I have to set up my station outside, either on my balcony or somewhere downstairs near the building.
FO-29 is quite easy to reach using a hand-held Arrow and usually puts a good downlink with no pre-amp required.

Hi Jim,
I worked FO-29 with an Arrow on a camera tripod on a trip to Colombia in 2013, and it worked well. I did have the AMSAT broadband preamp running although I also blew the preamp out during the trip so probably was working without it some of the time as well. The elevation I could get from that QTH wouldn't let me work it below about 25 degrees due to QRM and mountains, so I can't speak to low elevation stuff. I heard it quite well and was heard well, while I had AOS.

I worked about 10 stations on a pass of FO29 with a handheld arrow and pair of 817s yesterday from a park bench in Charleston. You'll do better if you can handhold the arrow, or use a mount that allows you to twist it to peak for polarity. Practice ahead of time. Pick a frequency away from the center, announce it ahead of time and stick to it through the operation. The middle is full of QRM and stations with broken VFOs.
Also, I'm sure you know this, but for others sake, limit the uplink to 10 watts or so. It's easy to get an RF burn with 100w that close to you. If you can't be heard with 10 watts, chances are something else is wrong.
That setup will also work AO-7 and AO-73 mode B.

I just got done doing a multi-state road trip using both an Arrow in stock configuration, and using just the 70cm portion to receive and a vertical to uplink. I was using an 857 to uplink, and a Funcube Dongle Pro+ plugged into my laptop to receive. 10 ft of LMR240, a diplexer on the rx to deal with any desense, and that was it. No pre-amps or anything else. It worked flawlessly. I was able to constantly hear the bird at 2°-3° when I was out in the plains away from trees, and tracking the bird was easy. I was just holding the Arrow, because I have never had much luck using a tripod. While FO29 doesn't seem to polarity flop as much as SO50 does, being able to twist it to get the best downlink on the fly has given me the best luck.
Your mileage may vary, and I'm still the newb here, but that's my 2 cents.

You'll have much more luck with the Arrow+IC-910H on FO-29 without preamps than you would with SO-50. However, you will have much more breathing room on FO-29. Especially if you stay away from the center of the transponder (435.850-860) and avoid "neighbors" creeping in on your QSO's.
Good luck and have fun! That's one of my favorite portable setups! See http://www.w5pfg.us/2013/01/a-simplistic-yet-effective-portable.html

Clayton I looked at your picture of the 910 setting on the roof, and a suggestion, go to auto parts store and get some windshield squirter hose and put on the prop up leg of the radio. Might make it a bit more slip proof and will be easier on the finish of your car. Just a thought.

John,
I've done Grid-Expeditions from 60+ Grids across the US and Canada using an IC-820H with an Arrow on SO-50 and FO-29 and several others. Sometimes the Arrow was handheld and lately on a camera tripod. There was never a problem hearing the birds all the way down to LOS. The coax is so short that the loss is minimal and no preanmp has been needed. You shouldn't have a problem.
Check out my QRZ.com page for a pic of my typical setup prior to using the camera tripod.

No problem.
I used something very similar from 3B9C. (set of hotel step ladders rather than camera tripod.)
Just check for breakthrough before you go.....and possibly the TX rating of the duplexer?
Good luck
