Just want to introduce myself, Steve Raas N2JDQ , As I am brand new to the Birds , yet a long time Amateur. I will be asking many questions Im sure and I am familiarizing myself with the AMSAT Community. I have just recently purchased a sat rig and will be slowly erecting a station in the near future. 73's for now.

Welcome and yes, please ask all the questions.
This is one big fun hobby and the folks online are great. Do yourself a big favour and join Amsat if you haven't done already.

Steve, N2JDQ, Welcome to the wonderful world of satellites. I would hope that you become an AMSAT member as this is the only viable group that takes satellites seriously enough to organize itself (HA!) I am the Local NJ co-ordinator and you will run into me at many hamfests. I man the AMSAT tables and try to demo some sat ops (If I am outside). There are many satellite users around that can be of assistance and you will become familiar with them as you go to some amateur radio club meetings (& hamfests!) On the BB, you will find interesting threads and I would advise you to join the ANS group and get weekly bulletins of satellite interest. Good Luck ! 73, Dee, NB2F NJ AMSAT Coordinator

Hi Steve
Just to let you know there is also "other viable group" who also takes satellites seriously enough to provided numerous web sites full of help. There is more than 50 AMSATS worldwide. Here is some of them.
As you notice some AMSAT-NA field coordinator don't event pay any respect to them. Be careful in your choices some of them are better than other only just from the point of HAM SPIRITS and the international respect. Just to let you know i am a FORMER AMSAT coordinator. feel free to ask me why? You probably start to understand.

If someone wants to live under a rock cut off from the rest of the world he just have do it fully not partially :).
If you want to have a real impact in a realistic near future satellite project check this link and click on the satellite bottom antenna tip. It is what i called the REAL building blocks of a VIABLE AMSAT'S. Here is the link.

good stuff, Luc, but some of these guys will never wake up!!!

I guess now that everyone has taken a shot, I must put my keyboard to use-I used the term AMSAT NOT AMSAT-NA. I am well aware of the rest of the world. Be kind now. By putting to words YOUR feelings, you could sway potential "stars of assistance" to the dark side. Once again, Steve, N2JDQ, Welcome to the satellite community. 73, Dee, NB2F NJ AMSAT Co-ordinator-moving forward for launches.

More than happy to see we shared the same opinions here and that there is no need to start an opinions war once again.
Here i used these words: AMSAT'S or the world-wide amsat's to avoid any confusion.
For the dark side it is probably full of black matter or full of the first negatively charged molecule found in space. This side is already near full capacity and there is no need to added more negative molecules in it. More on this on this link.
