I tried to visit the ARISSat-1 documentation site mentioned in the Nov/Dec AMSAT Journal to look at the current schematics, and received a warning that the site's security certificate was not issued by a trusted source.....

Yes, it is safe. You get a warning because the site's certificate is invalid.

Is it any worse than the majority of sites that don't even have a security certificate?
