Hi all,
I'm thinking of retiring my Kenwood TS711/811 combination in favour of the Icom 910, so I can add 23cm and 9600baud i/o to my station.
Reading some of the reviews on ehams have not entirely been favourable. I'd like to hear from any one who owns or has used the 910 before I part with my $s.
regards
Tim
I have one and really like it. It has the TCXO, which I think makes all KINDS of differences. Not just stability, but phase noise as well, which affects other things to some degree. I like it, no complaints. Get the TCXO, and get at least one DSP module.

Don't know much about this radio but sure had a terrible experience with Icom and the IC-3230A I bought some years ago. There service compared to Kenwood really stinks. I bought a Yaesu FT-847 because of this experience. Hope you don't have a problem and need to send the radio to Washington state for repair. Good luck with it. 73's << John

The 910H is a good rig...the best satellite choice...but it has its drawbacks. My biggest complaint, after nearly 10 years of operation, the lack of metering...there is no audio monitor, and nothing more than an led to peak to measure modulation on ssb. In weak signal and satellite operation its outstanding. I had a ball on ao-40 and was very pleased with the rig. But it shares another ICOM peculiarity, if you have set things up for ssb, with compression and proper mic levels, switching to FM does not bypass compression...this is also an issue with the 706 and as far as I know 7000. They are also notorious for less than specified RF output...I have several friends who've noted the same issue, and have actually returned the radio to ICOM for inspection without satisfaction. bottom line - its the best choice available, but it sure could use some updating...like going digital as ICOM did with the 7000 upgrade over the analog 706 series. 73, Warren W1GUD On Apr 12, 2007, at 6:48 AM, John Price wrote:

Bad service is not something on which Icom has a monopoly. I sent my FT-847 rig in to Vertex. It was "repaired" without authorization, poorly at that, then lost for a couple of weeks while they tried to find where it was sent. What really chapped me was that at no time were e-mail or phone calls ever made to me to explain what was going on, so any information I got was on my dime.
To be fair, there seems to be some sort of house cleaning going on out there, both in the technical and administrative ends. Perhaps I can get some answers at Dayton. In any case, should I ever need service again, I will definitely go with on of the independents, of which there are still a few around.

Thanks Allen for the heads up on the Yaesu service problem. Seems they all have problems at times. I really have had good luck with the Kewood service center in Virginia Beach. Others might not have had the same service. They replaced the display in TMV7A under warrenty 3 years after the purchase. I kinda liked that. I have spoken with the service fellow from down there at Dayton a couple of times and he seems really nice. I approached the Icom folks at Dayton about the IC-3230A problem and all I got was "well it is over a year old and out of warranty". Three trips to Washington state in that year was enough to get it out I guess. Well that is my dimes worth. Sure hope others have better luck with them. 73's <<John

John,
By coincidence, I have also had great luck with Kenwood, and for precisely the same problem with the same radio. Still going strong, with a good LCD, after 9 years. From what I heard, they got a lot of experience fixing that one.

Hi all,
Thanks to all the people who responded to my questions on the 910.
I have decided to buy one and retire the 811 and 711.
I'll be using it predominantly for sat work with the occasionally foray into VHF/UHF field days.
Some on the concerns about its deafness and intermod performance I believe can be overcome having found alternate alignment procedures to tweak up the rx.
Looking at the circuit diagrams in the service manual show that the rx an tx are fairly standard affairs and I should have no trouble maintaining it.
Thanks again to all
regards
Tim
