I am thinking of upgrading the station by removing the ft817 as downlink receiver and going to SDR receiver.
Looking for best data to get started and choice of SDR unit to use.
Open to hearing pro and con!
Also interested in raspberry pi plus SDR to do the job. I have no experience with raspberry but appears to becoming popular.
Can SATpc 32 control a sdr as it would any transceiver?
Jim
Jim,
I am very pleased with the FunCube Pro+ dongle. It is my downlink for sats.
No matter what SDR you get, make sure it will run with SDR Console v3.03. This program will run your existing TX pefectly, including doppler. It is a beautiful program that is always being updated. It is currently free in preview, but may not stay that way forever. I have been using it about a year.
Th FC Pro+ was designed specifically for sat work and does a very good job.
I have SatPC32 and have had it since the AO-10 days (I think). I don't use it any longer. It is overly complicated and hard to configure. It is powerful, but cumbersome. Very non-intuitive, and downright ugly in appearance. (All very subjective opinions, of course).
Once I laid my hands on a modern program like SDRC, there was no going back.

Hasan,
There are lots of YouTube videos out there on how to get started with ham SDR. Check those out for some good detailed information.
I have both the FuncubePro+ and the new SDRPLAY Rsp1A, SDR units. There is good to be said about both for satellite work, I like them both. They both work with almost all of the SDR programs out there. For software, SDR Console is a good one to start with. Using SDR Console from SDR-Radio.com, these two receivers work pretty much plug and play.
For cheaper SDR sticks, RTL-SDR.COM has a new and improved unit with metal enclosure, extra filtering and ability to go into the HF region. All for about $22 US. It doesn't match up to the two mentioned above, but a a cheap one. :-)
