Thanks so much to everyone for the links, manuals and info. I'm going to look at it again with fresh eyes tomorrow on the bench with a short piece of cable. Visual inspection of the inside of the control box doesn't show anything suspicious.

I'll report back tomorrow if I can get this old dog going again.
