I would love to be able to watch NASA Select from my shack again. Back when it was on analog C band I used to keep an eye on it during ISS passes. Now I believe it has moved to an MPEG 2 K band transponder. Does anyone here catch the downlink using "FTA" (Free to air) equipment? If so, I'd appreciate if you could contact me directly and let me know what kind of equipment is required, or any suggestions. The dish and feed don't bother me, it's the MPEG-2 receiver that I'm unfamiliar with. (And, yes, I know the commercial satellite TV carriers have it, but that would cost money :) )

I watch NASA TV off of the web during most events these days. I just go to
http://www.nasa.gov/55644main_NASATV_Windows.asx
for watching it on windows, and there are other similar capabilities for watching it use realplayer etc.

We use the NASA channel on our ATV repeater using Dish Network. The unit we use has a card, but no subscription and does work that way (channel 213).
However, we either have a problem with our receiver, or DishNet's software likes to give us problems because there is no subscription - the unit works for about two days and goes back to "aquiring signal" or will be found on their promo channel 101. That means we have to go back to the repeater site and choose channel 213 again.
It is also available with Direct TV without subscription, I am told.

My experience was just the opposite. Firefox 2.0 works and IE7 does not. Under IE7, I get a message telling me to download Windows Media player (which was already installed). I downloaded the latest version from Microsoft, and it still tells me that I need the media player.
There does not seem to be any support on whooda.com, so I looked up the parent company at www.vdc.com. It is a subscription service, but NASA TV is free and the viewer can be resized and moved around on the screen. Under IE7, I got audio at www.vdc.com, but no video. Just for grins, I tried Firefox 2.0 and the site recognized my browser, asked to install an add-on to firefox, and it worked great! I did not try www.whooda.com prior to installing the add-on. BTW - The high definition video loop demo is impressive. You need about 3Mbps to get the HD stream.
I watched ANDE, FCAL and RAFT deployment via the NASA TV Landing page. Sure wish I had known about these other sites. The resolution is much better! and... mentioning amateur satellites makes me feel better about responding to an off topic post. :-)

Getting closer... It recognizes FF 2.0, but doesn't catch on that I'm on a Linux box. So, the .exe installer file doesn't do me too much good...
By the way, the whooda add-in doesn't show up on Firefox's site. Makes me a little nervous...

whooda.com works on my Firefox on Windows XP, although the display is no better than than the smallest NASA RealMedia feeds. The issue appears to be that it uses Microsoft's proprietary Media Player, software that has serious portability, DRM and privacy issues.
whooda offered to install an MS Media Player plug-in on my Linux box, but I'm unwilling to let it try. The link offered saying "Click here to learn more" doesn't have any explanation, it just starts trying to download the WMP plug-in.

A few years ago I wanted to be able to receive NASA-TV via satellite but without buying any satellite service. I went to one of the big electronic stores in town and tried my best to buy a dish and receiver but they wouldn't sell it to me without also buying a "plan". A few days later Sears had a sale on a Dish Network setup and they were willing to sell me the equipment without having to purchase a plan.
I installed it all and was able to receive NASA-TV and a few "shopping" channels without any other subscription.
We have since moved and I haven't put the dish back up but likely will one of these days.
FWIW, I also tried the whooda.com link mentioned here and with the flip4mac plug-in installed it plays very well on my Powerbook (OSX) - thanks for pointing that link out as it looks much better than the Real links via Yahoo, etc.

Hi Jason.
First of all you need a FTA (free to air) digibox. Then you have a few options to RX NASA-TV
1: AMC6@82West C-Band http://www.lyngsat.com/amc6.html 2: Echostar7@119West Ku-Band http://www.lyngsat.com/echo7.html 3: AMC7@137West C-Band http://www.lyngsat.com/amc7.html
If you still have your C-Band dish, all you need is a new box, maybe a new LNB too. On C-Band you will also get the other NASA-TV channels, check the links, they have beam maps too.
Good luck with it.
Happy new year to all on the board.
