I sometimes use a Diamond dual band whip with my TH-D72, and I have no problem getting through AO-91, AO-92, and SO-50. So it's working with the radio's internal diplexer. However, you can't just keep the whip vertical. You have to move it around to match the polarity and find the sweet spot of the antenna pattern.
