Not sure who has been there before Messenger. The Amateur-DSN guys in Europe are copying it. Status of the Deep Space Network and what is being communicated with is displayed at:

Russians "soft" landed first in 1970 with Venera 7.

Venera 7 soft landed, sort of, chute failed and it fell over, on Venus. The Russians never sent a spacecraft to Mercury, that I can find a reference to. The US Mariner 10 did a flyby in 1974 but as far as I can tell Messenger will be the first to land, or crash, on Mercury.
